Nodes Double in XML Edit
Nodes Double in XML Edit
Anybody experience nodes doubling in XML Editor when you duplicate a node or paste in stuff.
It happens unpredictability, so sometimes it's fine, sometimes it goes crazy. If you delete either both get deleted, because you can see they both have the same id, so the only way to clear it up is close the drawing and reopen it.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
Just duplicated a small group, and got 10 duplicates.
I wonder if it's because I have 2 svgs open at once.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
When I click on the duplicate button, I get a single copy with a new id (running Inkscape 0.91 on Linux Mint). Copy-pasting also creates a new id. What you get looks very strange (and invalid, too).

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
Sometimes it works, sometimes in the same session it goes haywire, sometimes closing the XML Editor clears it, but mainly it's close the drawing and reopen.
I always open the XML editor and Document Properties when I do these, and with multiple drawings open with their XML Editor and Document Properties, maybe that is what is causing it.
Maybe rename that file so you have 3 copies, and open them all with their XML editor and Document Properties.
I wonder if it's my dual screen, because the drawing selection goes a bit haywire as well, ie you open a new drawing and when you try to add something to it it switches to another drawing.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
It still has the duplicate problem in 9.2 pre3.15195
Where do you sub bugs for 9.2?
EDIT
Just created a circle on screen, and that also produced multiple entries in XML editor.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
Seems you found the bug report section. For those in search who stumble over this: Old Grey reported it here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1652187 (but it was already known, so was marked as a duplicate).

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
There seams to be a lot of different faults, all related. It's some bug when XML Editor is open with multiple drawings.
I can reliably produce this now - I did it 3 times -
Open Inkscape, and open it's XML Editor.
Close it - this ensures XML Editor will open automatically when Inkscape is next opened -.
Open Inkscape - XML Editor should've opened as well -.
Press square button on tool bar and draw a square.
Open 2nd File/New window - it's XML Editor should've opened as well -.
Draw a circle.
Open 3rd File/New window - XML Editor should've also opened -.
Go back to the drawing with a shape a duplicate it, and you get multiple entries in XML Editor.
Win7 64 SP1
Inkscape - 9.2 pre3.15195

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
Here is the video.
There is another fault where you can't select a window unless one is minimised, plus the bottom tabs go out of order, plus if you press a button in the left toolbar it switches to another Inkscape window.
There something about XML Editor, multiple screens, and maybe the left toolbar.

EDIT
I had the 3 windows open but I put the 3 XML Editors on the 2nd screen of my dual monitor setup so I could see all of them at once, and when you select one of the main windows all 3 XML windows show exactly the same XML of the main widow you are on.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
Good work on exploring the issue. ::thumb up::
I seem to recall some personal experiences where having the xml editor open on more than one instance of Inkscape produced erratic behavior. I just avoided it from then on, and closed the xml editor when switching between instances.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
I was making a tutorial video about INK and I had 2 windows open, so I closed one so that the doubling problem won't come up in the tutorial. Well half way through it doubled when I grouped.
Looks like that maybe if you had 2 windows open and close one, it can still happen.
https://youtu.be/zuFBi8EgfF0?t=11m16s
Now it's in my video forever.
Another phenomenon is
Open INK and open XML edit, and close it - you want both to auto open next restart -.
Open INK - XML should be open -, and move XML box so you will notice the difference of another one -
Open another new - it's XML should be open -.
Now close the new one, and there is 2 XML boxes still on screen.
It also still has a grid fault. It happened twice in this video.

Maybe try working with the xml editors docked?

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
Can't duplicate the issue here with floating xml dialogs, either.
Tested with three instances, as per OldGrey's bug report.
Single laptop display, .92-pre4
EDIT: can now replicate, see below...

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
I unplugged my 2nd monitor and rebooted and this is what it does.

Not that I want to keep the XML docked, as I need half a monitor just for that, but how do you dock the XML. I click Iconify this dock and a vertical tab appears in the dock.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
Hi OG,
The dock feature is similar to others... drag by the header (not the title-bar) and snap to the side. Similarly, drag the header to "tear-off" to a floating window.
I'll try with your methods (floating dialogs, xml duplication). NB that I am using the GUI or copy/paste for duplication, not the XML editor.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
Yep, I can replicate the issue with floating dialogs now.
So for now, I'd keep the xml editor docked when working with multiple instances of inkscape.

Re: Nodes Double in XML Edit
I did a quick test with it docked, and it was fine.
The problem is that the XML Editor is hard to use when you dedicate half of the second monitor to it, because we have hundreds or maybe thousands of nodes, so having it that small is a big pain.
Now that we have narrowed it down a bit, hopefully someone will know what to fix.
