Export png with transparent background?

Postby hdamm » Thu Mar 26, 2015 6:51 pm

Hello.
I think, I've asked this question before:
how do I export a drawing as png but with an transparent background?
I did someting within the "background" slider in the document properties (I'm using the German Version. Is this the correct translation?), but I cannot recall what?
Can somebody please show me the way?
Thanks

Yes, in Document Properties, the background needs to be transparent (the typical checkerboard pattern that indicates transparency in many other graphics programs doesn't appear on the canvas in Inkscape). (But it does appear in the color indicator.) Click on the color bar, to change the color and/or transparency (A slider). After that, you need to use File menu > Export PNG Image (and not Save As Cairo png).

Thank you brynn for your answer.
But - hmmm - when I open the png-file the background is solid black?
Also: In document properties I put the colour slider ("background colour" at the very top of that window) to the far left, that should be transparent, right?
(And yes - I "export bitmap" within the file menu.)
- confused -

When you said you opened the png-file, do you mean that there is a PNG in the SVG file?

You can't change the background of a PNG or any image in raster format with Inkscape. You can only change the background of the SVG file.

In Document Properties, when you open the color dialog, it's the A slider that needs to be all the way left. I'm assuming you're using the Wheel tab, so that the A slider is the only one there is. But if you're using RGB or HSL, the A slider is only 1 of all the bars that can be changed. Just to be clear.

But as long as the A slider is all the way left, and even if the background of the SVG file looks black, when you export, it will be a transparent background in the resulting PNG.

I think it sounds like you might be trying to change the background of the PNG image, which can't be done with Inkscape.

If you still have questions, will you please attach your SVG file?

dhamm,

Please upload an example file or post a link to it on dropbox (or similar).
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Hmm - here it seems to have actually a transparent background... :?
Well, thank you all for your support anyway.
