I've just created one drawing, and it printed perfectly. I then modified the drawing, saved it as another name, and printed it again. This time it printed with the whole page covered in a black background. A few of the objects were printed on top of the black background. Any idea why this happened? There is no object in my drawing that covers the whole drawing space. Something seems to have told the printer to print the page on black. I've tried printing it to PDF, and the same thing happens (see attached file). There is no black in the Inkscape screen (see second attachment).
Any idea what I have done wrong?
Thanks - Rowan

Hi.
Looks like something has happened to the transparency of your embedded image.
When resetting the transparency the black disappears.

Re: Drawing prints with black background
Hello
First that I noticed, the theme of your inkscape gui seems like a special 64bit version of it. The "partha's version" if i'm not wrong:
http://www.partha.com/
However, "oficial stable version" (for 32 bits, but they can be installed in 64 bits systems) are here:
https://inkscape.org/en/download/
I said this only if you note some unstable issues in your inkscape's version. Maybe the 32 bits version are more reliable, for the moment.
About your design. It will be better if you attach the original SVG version, or a sample of it.
As Ragstian said, there is an embedded image in your pdf.... why? I don't understand what is the utility for that. In my case, this embedded image appears with a black background when the file is re-imported to Inkscape.
1.- Are you exporting the SVG to PDF with the "Save AS" dialog?
2.- An advice, If you export your SVG to PDF, and then import again to Inkscape to work with it, several problems may emerge. Like text fonts not recognized, unncesesary cliping paths, etc. Please only make changes with the svg version.
I think that it's all I have to say for the moment,
Greetings

Re: Drawing prints with black background
Thank you for your suggestions.
I created the PDF by printing from Inkscape using the PDFill PDF Writer virtual printer.
I don't know why there is an embedded image. I did not intentionally add an image. All the objects I intentionally created were created with the Inkscape vector drawing tools (rectangles, arcs and beziers).
How do I see a list of all the objects in my drawing in Inkscape? If this was AI I could see them all in the layers window. Is there something similar in Inkscape?
I have just tried deleting objects in the approx. order in which I created them, and it seems that the doors (which were created with a blue rectangle, an arc and another white line-less rectangle (for hiding the wall where the door was going) in a group is causing the problem. If I delete both of the doors, then I can print without the black.
Why might this be?
SVG file attached.
Thanks - Rowan

Re: Drawing prints with black background
Hi.
Looks like the PDF-creator virtual printer created the embedded image.
Your workflow for creating the PDF file is too complicated as Inkscape itself can create the PDF file.
As suggested by hulf2012 save your work in SVG format and only export to PDF whenever this is needed.
If you need to edit the file open the original SVG file -perform your edits - save as SVG and re-export to PDF.

Hello
I agree,
Just try Inkscape's export to pdf option (using Save as or save a copy dialog).
mmm... Be careful with the options, specially with the size of the paper.

Re: Drawing prints with black background
Hi.
You may use the xml editor (Shift+Ctrl+F), the only similar to object browser /though I wouldn't bother with such.
Apart the technical improving of your work, I would note that the door is too close to the wall (think of the door handle).
Can you upload some sketches with measures you trying to (re)draw?

Re: Drawing prints with black background
Thank you for your further suggestions.
Please note though that I did not use the "print to PDF" option because I wanted a PDF. The first time I printed to an A3 piece of paper, but it used up several pounds worth of black ink, because of the spurious black background, so next time I printed to PDF to avoid wasting more black ink. The issue is not with the PDF, it is with printing. I still do not understand where the image that you refer to has come from, or why it causes all that black, or why in the Inkscape screen I cannot see it, or how to remove it.
Thanks - Rowan

Re: Drawing prints with black background
Howdy,
It is not uncommon for some printers to get confused with files sent directly from inkscape, Saving a copy as PDF and printing the copy is often the best workaround. I was successful printing in either case, using an HP laserjet postscript printer.
The conversion to PDF frequently adds clipping and masks that view easily in Inkscape, but editing the files can be annoying; so the m.o. of working in SVG, and saving-copy-as for output/printing is the ticket.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/
