Hiya,
I have a Genius F610 tablet and I just can't get pressure sensitivity working with 48.2. I can draw with it, but IS just will not recognise the pressure part. I had problems originally with 47, but got it sorted out in the end, but 48.2 is so far resisting any of the combination of toggles in the input panel/tool settings. My tablet is listed with chinese characters, which again, was a problem in 47, but I got working in the end. It works perfectly with every other painting app I have, Photoplus, Artrage, Gimp, photoshop et al, so it's very annoying that this simple thing is broken in a package I love AGAIN. Has anyone got a clue as to why it's not working?
I've read a lot of other posts on the subject and they all involve voodoo about unplugging the tablet when opening IS, waving your hands in the air and chanting or sacrificing a goat or somesuch. I just want to know why it's not 'plug in tablet, paint in pressure sensitive mode' like every other package out there.
Frustrated,
Mike

There are a couple of settings about pressure sensitivity in Inkscape Preferences > Mouse. If you haven't already, you could double check on those. Maybe somehow that setting escaped your pref file which normally should preserve the pressure sensitivity when upgrading? Just a thought. Or the other tip that seems to help lately, is something about opening Inkscape with the tablet, instead of with the mouse. Or something like that....?
I know how frustrating it is when what you thought was a simple upgrade suddenly changes everything. But I guess all computer programs are subject to that kind of thing. I know, I just lost IE which I had been using since Windows 95, because OMG MS wants IE9 to look like every other browser out there. They just forgot to make it work like every other browser!
As for Inkscape, it is constantly under development, and subject to change with every upgrade, intentional or not. I'd say it's par for the course for computer programs in general. But the good part for Inkscape, is that being an open source program, any user can report bugs or request new features. So if you do find a problem, you can get it in front of the developers quickly and easily. With any licensed or copyrighted program, you'd never have such a luxury.

Re: Tablet working in 47, but not in 48.2
Hiya,
Thanks for the help, but having tried it at work with my wacom as well as my genius 610 at home, neither work with pressure sensitivity. In fact they draw without it when they're disabled in the drawing device panel, but as soon as I set it to screen, they don't even draw at all. The cursor follows the pen, but drawing with the pen results in no lines or whatever. If I disable them again, they'll draw (without pressure sensitivity again). The most bizarre bug. I can't figure out what to do. I prefer IS to AI, but this basically means I can't use it for my drawing style. I script part time on my own plugins, so I'm just surprised this basic functionality for a drawing program seems so flakey and low on devs' priority...

Have you tried 48.1? I can get pressure sensitivity to work in 48.1 but not in 48.2, so you might have similar luck. Between 48.1 and 48.2 some changes were made that affected cursors and menus and dialogs and I guess the interaction in general so that's when the pressure sensitivity went.
As another tablet user, may I ask what use you are putting pressure sensitivity to? Are you using it anywhere outside the calligraphy tool?

Your mind is what you think it is.

It just doesn't work in 48.2; there are numerous bugs about it on the bug reporter including one that I submitted.
I can confirm that 48.1 works fine - you load it, make sure pressure sens.. is ticked, restart and voila. Works. Though I am having performance issues with it..

Aha! Thank you. Fortunately I'd downloaded but not installed 48.1 so just installing that fixed it. I pretty much use it inside the calligraphic tool, but that's the tool I use pretty much all the time (I love weighted pen strokes so much more than sterile constant width lines!)
