A LITTLE HELP PLEASE

Postby Raven65 » Fri Oct 16, 2015 2:35 pm

 Hey guys!!

Just downloaded Inkscape and have a question here. Is it possible to turn a saved svg from Inkscape into a useable 3D obj file using the program?? Tried the conversion with Blender and for whatever reason it doesn't show up! Even after applying the "trace bitmap"! The file that I am using is a photo of a yellow dress from the 1960s. And I need to make it into a obj so that I can use it for a 3D model. Like I said. It doesn't show up in Blender at all! Also. I'm not sure if I can load it into MeshLab like that either. And as much as I adore 3DP Rocks their lithophanes don't work well with any of the 3D programs that I have. Sorry about my tone. Particularly since I'm very new. But trying to figure out if Inkscape will work for that and it's cutting to the wire because this is going to be used for a film using 3D animation.

Get back to me on this please,
Thanks!!
Raven

PS: Sorry about the font color. Sight impairment. Thanks.

Ok, I'm gonna use the same color for my text, that you used. However, the message might have a different background color, so I'm not sure if this font color will work for you, against the different background color. In any case, you can use Ctrl + A to highlight the text, which might give you a better view.

Actually, I can't help you very much. All I can say is that I'm very sure that Inkscape images can be used to create a 3D render in Blender. Unfortunately, I can't say exactly how it's done. I've always had the impression it takes vector or SVG files or images. I'm not sure about PNG or raster images, but I think maybe on that.

I would think using vector (SVG) would be best, but I've never used Blender. However, I know other members here have used Blender and can help. They'll probably be around pretty soon :D

You can import svg-s into blender.
Svg is 2D, and for anything to show up after the import in blender you need to make paths inside the svg. Then the paths will be used as curves in blender.

Further on, a raster image/photograph won't work by definition.
First you would need to trace it over/use trace bitmap.

Then if you got that imported to blender, it won't be 3D by a sudden.
You will need to extrude it at least and for an obj you need to export it.
(Still that would be far from a model of a T-shirt that could look similar to one on a torso.)

:? You are supposed to be able to. But for some reason my file won't show up even after importing it into Blender. It will open a file for it. But the svg image doesn't show up. :?

Svg is sort of a container document. If you have an embedded raster image only, it won't show up.
Make it plain simple, for importing.

Oh well, even if things are working, you might not notice it, right?
In blender after importing, change to wireframe rendering mode (Z) and check on the outliner on the right - the svg will be imported as objects named curve, curve.001, and so on.
Select the desired object there.
In the properties editor on the right -at the curve setting's tab- the object's id-s are displayed that were used in inkscape.

Now if you check the 3D viewport window's right side tab, the dimensions are displayed.
Keep an eye to them: blender uses 1 m as a default unit -so if your svg was within page borders, it would be smaller than x: 0.21, y: 0.297.

Maybe you can share your file if you get really stuck.
