Best Headless Server O/S for Inkscape

Postby BillBinko » Wed Jan 13, 2010 3:21 am

Hi all,

I'm currently running Inkscape .46 on Centos 5.3 x86-64 in an headless server setup (Inkscape is called by a LAMP web application).

I have found a number of issues with this, including ancient system libraries, slow releases, etc. Most importantly, getting .47 and higher to compile has proven impossible and the old cairo libraries from CentOS 5.3 don't create vector-based PDFs (a real show-stopper).

I currently have three choices going forward:

1) Upgrade to Centos 5.4 and hope that I can get .47 to build (and get decent PDFs).
2) Switch to Fedora Core 11, which I have successfully build .47 on with good PDF results, and I know (My experience is mostly RedHat based)
3) Switch to a Ubuntu-based release which most of the Inkscape developers seem to use. Looking into Ubuntu, I see several versions such as Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Studio (http://ubuntustudio.org/), etc.

So, could I get the community's opinion here? I want to make sure that I move to something that will let me run recent releases of Inkscape (preferably building the nightly build when bugs I need are fixed). I also need to run this headless in a colocation facility, so I don't want any O/S that requires a GUI for basic maintenance (I don't think any would).

Any help would be appreciated.
Bill
