Topic: Solving website and .47 confusion
There should and could be better, short, easy to provide information on the initial website pages for Inkscape and .47 information.
The Screenshots page mentions a .47, but nowhere easy and intuitive to locate is there anything to look at as far as:
1. Stable or not stable, how do we download a .47?
2. Is it available for all platforms or just a few?
3. What's the approximate time-table for a stable .47 to appear?
4. If the Screenshots page mentions a .47, it sounds exciting, but the website is devoid of anything that discusses or points people to anything else about a .47.
All this leaves people really confused, especially those that would like to (and I did) download the current .46 stable Win version, but we all of a sudden see a .47 mentioned, then we start running around everywhere looking for .47 related material, when it could easily be right on the main or initial website page.
This is not really a "complaint", but after seeing and usin g the .46, this is a VERY well-done OpenSource application. Even before there is any 1.00 release in the future, this is a most interesting and digitally exciting code indeed.
A copy to Email reply is always appreciated.

Solving website and .47 confusion
Re: Solving website and .47 confusion
I agree that the website usability could be improved and make the community more aware of the dev builds.
Go to Download page, there you see the official release and unofficial releases, also you can download them by platform so this solves another of your questions.
Release dates are very uncertain, they are often changed (prolonged), 0.47 probably won't be officially released this year, but you can still start using the development version now.
btw don't you receive notices when a reply is posted here?

Thank you for the reply, and I switched the Forum setting to copy me response notices in Email.
.46 is VERY good, but .47 sounds like the "few" additions that it has makes it much more useful, but being that it's election time, followed by the holidays, waiting unti early 2009 (or sooner, hopefully) isn't all that bad.
Hopefully the .47 or the nightly builds are available...will re-check the Downloads and see if an "early" .47 is available.
Appreciate the reply and information.

There are 0.47 development builds available for windows, the link is on the download page of the main inkscape site.

Thank you, but still unless one is a Developer, that page and where it leads to is still needlessly confusing.
http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/?M=D
leads to:
Inkscape Win32 Snapshots
And no where does that page "clear as a bell" mention the simple ".47", instead there's a gobbly-gook of:
Inkscape20168-0811101920-fulldbg.7z 10-Nov-2008 19:31 78M
OK, is this .47 ? If so, where does it clearly state .47 ?
That's what I am referring to, but actually, we are both pleased and fortunate to have access to what appears to be nightly builds of a darn good open-source product.
ALSO, seeing mention of the efforts for an English language user guide / manual is great news, and as a writer, I hope to be able to contribute my part too:

Re: Solving website and .47 confusion
It doesnt clearly state 0.47 because its not 0.47, and wont be until we release, its sometimes called 0.47dev but that has potential to be equally confusing...
what it is is the development build, SVN rev 201268, built 11/10/08 with full debug symbols, which is what all that in the name tells you. Might not be overly friendly, but makes it a lot easier for us to track down bugs when that infos easily available from the zip the user dled
Inkscape20168-0811101920-fulldbg.7z 10-Nov-2008 19:31 78M
Will discuss with the guy that does those builds, maybe we can move everything but the current one to an old builds folder or something to make it simpler.

Perhaps the "best simple" fix for that page is to simply headline it far better -- something like:
This is the Development Page for .47 Build of Inkscape
or
Welcome to the Development Page for .47 Build of Inkscape
so people KNOW where they have arrived, and what they will likely find on the page?
Build or version .47 is already mentioned on the first part of the Inkscape web-site, so a page that says "This is the Development Page for .47 Build of Inkscape" would seem a great addition -- just that informative headline.
