Converting an SVG file

Postby paralou » Thu Mar 10, 2011 12:40 am

Hello,
I'm not an expert using SVG, but started computer business in 1976 !...

I love the SVG format, and usaly open the files using Adobe Illustrator (CS4), and convert them into *.tif files.

Several SVG files are not possible to open, and i recieve a message saying:

[ This file is not valide, You must validade it before open it ]

(I'm a french speaking person, and translated it, hope it's readable ?)

Can some expert tell me how to proceed, and how to start creating SVG files by my selve ?

Regards,
paralou

If you're running Linux, you can use `xmllint` to see what's wrong with your SVG files. You can download `tidy` from the W3C that has an XML mode to verify SVG files. There should be binaries for Linux, Windows, and OSX.

I'm not sure which executable you need; I don't do Windows. :) Try these links:

xmllint: http://xmlsoft.org/sources/win32/

tidy: http://tidy.sourceforge.net/#binaries

No, I use Linux. `xmllint` comes with Linux and `tidy` can be downloaded via the package manager. And updates are check for every day. Windows is just too old fashion to get work done. So, sorry, I don't know which version you need to download.

You already have Inkscape installed I guess (since you are asking in Inkscape-related support forum ;) )? Just create a new drawing (use whatever drawing tools Inkscape offers) and save it [1]: voilà, an SVG file is created.

If that's not your question, could you try rephrasing it? What exactly is your problem with Inkscape?

[1] using the default file format 'Inkscape SVG', or 'Plain SVG' (which will not store Inkscape-specific attributes).

OK, i will make some tests !
But my real question is that i downloaded several SVG files from the WEB, and many are "unreadable" !

As i already mentionned, i recieve a message when i try to open one of them:

[ This file is not valide, You must validate it before to open it ]

(French translation) !

How can i validate a SVG file ? that's my problem !

If you got them off the web, could you post their URLs? That way we might be able to figure out why their not working.

Hi Jean,
Image
Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Let's forget about downloading anything, until we determine what the problem is. You should not need to download anything besides Inkscape, to be able to open and edit SVG files (unless you want to work with EPS format, and you have not mentioned that).

I've never heard of that particular error message from Inkscape. Even if "valid" and "validate" are not the proper translation, I can't think of any error message that might be similar. When you say "unreadable", is that your conclusion, or has there been another error message or any kind of message?

Or does the "valid"/"validate" message come from Adobe Illustrator? If it's coming from AI, then you need to find a forum for AI. Unless you're saying that you want to open them with Inkscape instead of with AI, because AI won't open them?? If so, just start Inkscape, click Open, and choose the file that you want to open. Or locate the file in your file manager (or Windows Explorer), right click > Open with > Inkscape.

Can some expert tell me how to proceed, and how to start creating SVG files by my selve ?

Just open Inkscape and start drawing!

Hello,
I'm afraid i made a mistake by sending.
OK, here we go again !

I give you the link where you will find one of the "several" SVG files i'm unable to open (using Illustrator, or even...InkScape !)

http://www.rescon.be/images/PianoMecanism.svg

This is only an exemple !
Can you find the reason please ?
Regards
Jean

The link doesn't work - here's the server's response:
The page cannot be found

The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

I have no idea whether the file does exist on the web server, had been deleted or renamed, nor can I say anything about its content (whether it is broken in any way or not) because I can't download it: the web server says the file does not exist under the link you provided.

Is your question about configuring your web server to serve SVG files?

I get the same error message as suv. It could be that someone deleted that file before you had a chance to download it to your pc, and that's why you can't open it, it's probably notthere anymore.
If you can give us a link to a fiel that is still there we could help more. Also, do you use GIMP software, (it's also free), sometimes GIMP can open files that other programs can't open. It does open SVG files.
