I have Windows XP SP3 and Inkspace 0.48.1.2. I'm not use 0.48.2 because of some annoying bugs about displaying sliders in Fill and Line dialog and at moving Dialog properties window across the screen. Nothing critical, but I will wait for 0.48.3.

Well, problem for this topic is this. I can't print. The Print dialog box does not open at all. Maybe this problem is allready solved in 0.48.2. If not, should I report this as Bug?

No, don't report as a bug yet.

Is it a very large file that you're trying to print? That's the only reason I can think that Inkscape would crash when asked to print.

While I don't understand any of that code, there's something about a zip file in there. I don't think Inkscape could print a zipped file. I don't know if trying to print one would cause a crash though. And neither do I know whether the "FILE_DESCRIPTION="Bzip: file compressor"" refers to the file you're trying to print. But that would be my first (and only) guess

No, I think, the file for print is not compressed. But this problem happend with all files I tried to print. At the end I made simple picture with 3 rectangles. I want to test if tiny white line betwen rectangles will be visible on the paper. But then I can't print. Ah yes, all files I save in inkscape SVG format with no compression.

Before making this post I've spent a couple of hours searching the internet but I only found mainly 2008 issues and some 2010 with earlier versions. I am running windows XP SP3 and the crash happens once I am in the printing menu where you can select the printer. The crash occurs NO MATTER WHAT even if pressing CANCEL. In other words once the print options window pops up , there is no way to get out without a crash.

I will test another computer with XP and post again. But this crash is independent of the printer to select and independent of the drawing object. I've just made a rectangle and went to print.

This is the current version 0.48.2

Perhaps there is a bug? I would defer to ~suv on whether a report should be filed. If you searched the internet, you must have found the bug tracker (https://launchpad.net/inkscape). But if not, more info may be found there

OK after a lot of trial and error I found a work around. My default printer is an Epson stylus CX4800 I changed the default to the cute PDF printer and no more crashes EVEN if I select the CX4800 once in the print window. But if I put the epson back as a default. the crash is there no matter what even if I select another printer, in fact, just clicking to another printer for example the pdf writer, it triggers the crash. So, yes, there is a bug . However, it did not happened a couple of months ago or so, so I believe some Windows XP update is very likely the cause because it is also happening on another laptop with version 0.48.0 .

It does not happen with Windows 7 so it must be something in XP.

Anyway , changing the default printer is not a big deal so I consider this issue "fixed" and I am back to normal.

Oh awesome! Awesome that you figured out a fix, not awesome that there's a bug. Until it gets reported and/or fixed, can you tell me what a "cute PDF printer" is or means? In one of the bug reports, someone mentioned fixing a printing problem with a post script printer. I don't suppose they are similar? (That bug was probably different from this one though. It was an apparent bug with HP printers.)

In general, I have the impression that Inkscape's print support is weak, all around. But I always like to remind people that Inkscape is still very much a work in progress, and has not yet even released a version 1.0

Off to search "cute PDF printer".....

Ah-ha! It seems there are quite a few "CutePDF" products, including Editor, and Writer/converter, and a couple others. Nothing about a printer, but I'm thinking you must mean the converting the Inkscape doc using that products allows it to print?

Hi, yes, cute pdf writer is a virtual printer where your printout is actually a pdf file . It is free and you can download it here http://www.cutepdf.com/ .Once installed, it will be available like a real printer.

So, I believe it is similar to a post script writer as you mentioned.

On the bug is really weird , as I mentioned, it "showed up" overnight as I was using Inkscape with no issues a couple of months earlier or so. Either I installed some dot net version or some application that may have modified the environment variables or a Windows XP update that use to install stuff regularly when shutting down Windows has made some changes that affects Inkscape when looking for available printers. I recently read that Windows Vista and 7 handles the printers in a different way as XP . It seems to be Vista and 7 creates an XPS raster file. Inkscape works OK on Windows 7.

I made another test. This printing problem occurs only if I turn on setting "borderless printing" in printer settings. I have printer Canon Pixma IP4200.

I already reported this in bug report.

Well, I will continue wait for 0.48.3.
0.48.2 is from september 6 2011. Now is almost 1 year.....

The last news.
Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939 is fertig. But this printing bug is not solvet yet. Should I wait for 0.49? But 0.49 will be in one or two year counted from septemeber 2012. Verrrrrrrrrry long wait. What do developers? I read that they fixed a lot of bugs. But why they do not want to fix this problem, which lasted from version 048.1 or earlier?

After reviewing this topic, I see that you've already made a bug report for this. You can follow the progress of the work on that bug. You should have received an email from Launchpad after you submitted it, and the email will provide a link to the bug, so you can follow the progress. Be sure to answer any questions that may be posted to that bug, and provide any kind of files they might need.

To my understanding (which is not very well informed) these last few "bug fix releases" (0.48.2, 0.48.2, and 0.48.4) are all things that need to be fixed before they can release 0.49. That's because 0.49 will have a new renderer, which is supposed to make Inkscape work faster in many circumstances (but not all). Apparently certain things need to be fixed before the renderer can be released. Maybe they are fixing other things too? I don't really know for sure.

So unless your bug is one that needs to be fixed before 0.49 can be released, I would guess that it won't be fixed soon. Although on the "plus side" printing problems in general are some of the worst problems that I've observed with Inkscape. So I would think just on the sheer prevalence of printing problems, the devs may want to address it as soon as they can. But I have no idea how many problems are in line ahead of printing problems.

I might mention that for the first bug I ever reported, it was 8 to 10 months before anyone even made one single comment. Then it was 3 or 4 years before it was fixed. Some bugs that I've reported still haven't been fixed. If you browse through Launchpad bugs, you'll see that there are problems dating back to 2007 (the oldest one I've seen). But when you understand what "open source" means, you understand why someone can't just stop what they're doing and fix your problem. If you need that kind of response, you should buy a proprietary product. Developers of those products are really anxious to fix problems on the spot, because if they don't, no one will buy it!

It's not that they don't want to fix your problem. It's just that there are so many problems to be fixed. I remember in another topic that you were asking why there were no new features. Well, they don't just have to fix problems, they have to make new features. And not only that, but they have to make sure they are using the best software to develop Inkscape, and they have to make sure the Inkscape software works with all the other software that it needs to work with, like printers, for example. There is very much work to be done, and we just have to be patient

PS -- Out of curiosity, I just looked to see the bug count. This is what I see!!

The last news from me is:
The problem with not opening print File window is solved in Windows 10 and Inkscape 0.48.5.
I mean, printing works OK in this enviroment.
Maybe I will newer know what was wrong. Was this problem in OS (Windows XP), or in Inkscape and is solved in 0.48.5.

Well, I wait now for Inkscape 0.92 and hope, there will not be the same bugs.
