I'm a noobee and I have a simple question....

Postby Wolf131313 » Thu Mar 28, 2013 1:42 pm

I just downloaded and installed Inkscape after years of Coreldraw. (finally got tired of them). It's impressive. I'm going through the tutorials literally from the start to learn it well. But one problems. I'm at the interface part of the wiki and it does not come close to matching my interface. I tried to move things like the various bars it speaks of and they are solidly in place with no way to move them. Is this the new interface for the latest version? Or did I download the wrong thing? Or is there a way to make them "active" to be able to move them where you'd like? The tool bar, command bar, snap bar, etc. Plus a lot of the descriptions for the interface are just plain wrong with what I'm looking at.
Help.....

Try the options at the bottom of the View menu - Default, Custom and Wide.

Okay, it seems to restore the different bars like the tutorial and that will make it easier as I am on the first tutorial now. But they still won't move around. They are still solidly in place. Hope you can help me know how to be able to move them around as needed.
Thanks again.

Welcome to INkscapeForum!

Unlike the rest of the manual, that chapter, for some reason, shows a very old version of Inkscape. The toolbar, control bar and snap bar can no longer be moved at will. As Xav explained there are those 3 choices for the configuration of the various bars. But that's all there is anymore. I have no idea why movable those bars were made immovable. Imo, it was a backward step. But unfortunately, they can no longer be moved anywhere :(

As a Coreldraw user you will easily get used to Inkscape, but the nice way of configuring the whole user interface to your personal preference is not here. You'll also miss the object manager a lot, though the XML editor comes a decent way in the direction and is more powerful in some respects. Part of it is due to the limits of SVG, part of it is just because Coreldraw has it's own perks. Once you get the hang of Inkscape and find a use for the enormous amount of extensions and possible filters you'll probably look back at both Coreldraw and AI with some disdain for their functionality. When it comes to speed Inkscape leaves something to be desired though in comparison. Disabling the filters in the view (no filters) often is required when working on complex drawings. Zooming out also works wonders in preserving floating point operations.
