How to do carved text in texture

Postby pythonologist » Thu Oct 16, 2008 4:18 am

Hi all, I'd like to do carved text applied to to an image texture (like marble etc). In Gimp, there is a sequence of operations using the bump map tool, see http://www.katspace.org/graphics/digitart/carve , and in Photoshop it can be done thus Top

You can do it using lighting filters, but I'm not sure exactly how. You might like to start with the docs at http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... hting.html

I've had a go at this, and you can see the results in http://www.finaleirc.com/g_s_223/misc/letters2.svg . There are two slightly different filters, one for each text object, go to Object -> Filter Effects...

With the first one, if you stare at it for a while it seems to pop out, there's some kind of optical illusion. With the second, it looks like letters in relief rather than carved I'm afraid.

If anyone else wants to have a go, feel free :)
