Postby Igin » Fri Apr 03, 2015 6:55 pm

v0.48.5 or earlier versions can run on my pc, but v0.91 crashes on startup. It looks like be caused by some extensions.
Does anyone have the same issue? how can I do to resolve it?

What is your operating system? Looks like maybe Windows, but which version?

Edit
Oh sorry. somehow I missed it, you already said

Edit #2
From your screenshot, it looks like you're just trying to open Inkscape (new blank document). If that's the case, I'm not sure. Any odd characters in the file path? If you're trying to open a particular file, it might be a problem with the file.

Edit #3
Known issue, if you're using 16 bit color depth

Hello,
I have doubts that this crashing is caused for an extension.
Try to do a clean installation. I mean:
- Erase all your previous Inkscape installations
- Erase all your configuration files. Right now, I don't remember well where they are. I guess that they are in a hidden directory in your "username" directory, but I might be wrong.
- Check that you are doing an installation of a 32 bits (not 64) version. Go to Inkscape.org to find valid downloads.

...
- well,...Why are you thinking that it's a problem related with an extension? ¿Did you installed one recently?
- There are been reports here in the forum of problems with special language systems (I've seen problems with chinese systems). What is the language of your system?
- Also there are been problems with special types of fonts, font filenames with special characters, etc. But I haven't seen nothing related with crashing at the start of the program

- As a note on the side, I've exeprimented crashes, but in random situations. I think they are more related with the use of the text tool. But I can't point exactly where is the problem... and I'm too lazy to fill a bug report

Anyway... let's see what happens
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

3.- If you manage to solve your problem, please post here your solution.

to @brynn,

I just open inkscape by double click the inkscape.exe, not to open a file.
I'm using 32 bit true color depth.

to @hulf2012,

1. Try to do a clean installation.
yes, I did. I unistalled inkscape, and deleted the profile folder (C:\Users\toshiba\AppData\Roaming\inkscape) before I install v0.91
I tried to uninstall and install v0.91 by every packages (msi, exe, and 7z, download from inkscape.org), and got the same error.
My system is 32bit , and I always download the 32bit packages.

2. I guess it may be caused by extension, because I found the error log file: C:\Users\toshiba\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\extension-errors.log, I pasted the content in topic.

3. Luguages. My system is windows 7 with Chinese language, and I tried to choose english or chinese in the first page of install dialog.

0.91 Win-64 / 32-bit won't start on Windows
I just found out the cause, and it is exactly one of the reasons you pointed out!
My Windows contained a font file with special characters on the file name. I removed the file, and now I can start Inkscape!
Thank you very much indeed!
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Hello

1. Well, at least we can discount that

2. About extension: That message appears to me either. And I think It appears to every user of Inkscape (or the 99% ;) ).It just says that some extensions won't work. But when Inkscape doesn't find an extension, It still works. Unless you recently installed an "experimental" extension, maybe very very very bad coded (I don't know,... maybe). Just for your information.

3. For me, that detail supports my suspects about a problem with your system....
... And, to me, the fault is in Inkscape side, not your system ...
... But coding a program isn't easy, not to mention that Inkscape is Open Source,... and "free as free beers" :)
... So I recommend, to check this forum, check in Inkscape.org a link to the debug page (Launchpad), check if they are working on that problem. If not, fill a bug, ask for a patch or workaround (*)... even support the development (money, time, etc).

I think it is related... but if the system is in Chinese, the name of the fonts will also be in Chinese. Not one font, but all the fonts perhaps. He would have to erase all the fonts :!: :?:

Or I could be wrong, anyway. I don't know if you have more information about your system: some special hardware configuration, some recently installed fonts... who knows?

Greetings... and good luck... If you managed to solve your problem, please tell us

(*) the workaround I see, Is go back to Inkscape 0.48, the last version that worked in your system.

I checked the font files names in C:\windows\fonts and delete all the font files which contains special characters, and now I can start Inkscape!
Thank you very much!

Code: Select all

C:
cd C:\windows\fonts
dir /b/on

Oh, nice work!

And I'm surprised too. I thought the problem with special characters in the font names, was that Inkscape would crash when using the Text tool with that font. I didn't realize it crashed the whole program at startup. That's rather severe!!

Hopefully they'll have that repaired in 0.91.1! I can't find the bug report, but it must be reported. (that LP search is awful!) If anyone else can find it, will you please put a link in this topic? (so people can follow, if they want to)
