Some gel effects

Postby ivan louette » Mon Sep 22, 2008 8:27 am

I would share these gel, jelly, plastic and painted effects. They are particularly suitable for text.

Enjoy !

Whoa! Thanks for sharing. Would love to see more of these. What is a filter and how are they made? Am I correct in using them with Ctrl+Shift+V to apply to other objects?

Here are some true non turbulent gels suitable for linear drawings, unfilled shapes and text.

Thanks ! Ctrl+Shift+V is one of the solutions to apply my filters. However if you want apply only the filter and not the whole style, the best is selecting an object, opening the Object/Filter Effect window and clicking on a filter name to see what happens. You can also change the settings in this window. Personnally I don't know so much in svg coding ; I proceed by trials and errors... ;) Otherwise you can also open the XML Editor and play with the raw code. And if you want begin to create your own Filter Effects, select one filter in the Effect/Filter list, apply it to an object and begin to change the settings at your taste. You can combine two or more in a new one. But you must save a file with your filters applied to some shape to save them.

Enjoy

Excellent filters! Would you agree to license them with an open source license so we could include some of them into Inkscape distribution, so they are available via Effects > Filter?

Thanks anyway!

Wow ! Of course I agree ! Open source license is the best solution. Of course I let you judge which ones are the best for users and make a selection at your convenience. And also change them to ameliorate their coding structure. In fact at the moment I extrapolate around filters from te list, changing settings by trials and errors. I severely lack of knowledge in svg but I am trying to study the code structure of filters (very hard because I never programmed anything). My first steps on changing the filters settings were in the XML Editor because I did discover the Object/Filter Effects Window only very recently. :D

I just asked me these days how I could introduce my filters into the list and change this list in function of my personal needs. I worked a lot on free brushes for Xara in the past and in Xara you have a Templates/Brushes Folder and if you save a file containing a brush in this folder the brush automatically appears in the brushes slider. Filter Effects are only code and thus that could be even easier. But I am not a programmer and I couldn't expect the complexity of this question...!

And finally, I am much more an hobbyist than anything else. In 2D, vector drawing applications are my preferred ones and I use only three of them in this order Xara, Inkscape (more and more) and Creature House Expression 3 (the one before it was lost...)

Thanks a lot for your interest and your kindness,

ivan

Some more transparent gels :

Updated with filter names and a "small objects ready version" for every filter + samples on 48 Pts text.

enjoy !

I go from one thread to another your filters just keep improving. Excellent Job. I should like to see the work that is generated from your creative filters.

Thanks ! And I should like to see the improvements that other users will add to these filters and how they will change the settings. That will be also a collaborative work !

Thanks ! Of course that would be constructive. I did it a lot for Xara some years ago. But at the moment I am prior trying to understand what I do with filters primitives. Perhaps in some weeks.

ivan
