I am having a similar issue. I have attempted to use the extension that renders LaTeX within Inkscape. I recently purchased a Mac Pro and installed the development version of Inkscape. I installed lxml from source. The oddity is that I have a similar setup on my MacBook and it works. I cannot determine what the difference is except that the I have had the MacBook for over a year and it was upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. I updated the Python eggs and also installed lxml from source. On the Mac Pro I built it against the libxml2 and libxslt provided from MacPorts. On the MacBook I found an egg for lxml and installed it manually. I tried to install the same egg on the Mac Pro but no go. However, the versions of lxml are the same. It works on the MacBook but not on the MacPro. The Python extensions using "inkex.py" do not work on the Mac Pro. I even tried the lxml package provided at inkscape.modevia.com but those do not seem to work on the Mac Pro either. I am not sure what else to do. Both machines have the same version of OS X (10.5.5) and seemingly the same version of Python and the Python extensions.

You may have already seen this thread (it's linked from the sticky), but just in case - viewtopic.php?f=29&t=884 - I'm not a Mac user so I don't know if it has your answer

I finally figured out a work around. The problem appears to be that the library files provided by the Inkscape install override or conflict with those provided by libxml2 and libxslt from MacPorts. To get the extensions to work using the latest development version of Inkscape 0.46 (build Inkscape-19855-10.5-i386.dmg) I did the following:
1. Installed libxml2 and libxslt from MacPorts
2. Installed lxml-2.1.2 from source
3. Installed pstoedit 3.45 from MacPorts
4. Renamed libxml2.2.dylib, libcairo.2.dylib, libpixman-1.0.dylib, and libpng12.0.dylib in the /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/lib directory.

The library files in the above directory appear to conflict with those installed by MacPorts.

I forgot to mention one last thing. In case you are not already aware. In order to install lxml from source on Leopard using the MacPort versions of libxml2 and libxslt you need to specify so when installing using options:

Code: Select all

sudo python setup.py install --with-xslt-config=/opt/local/bin/xslt-config --with-xlm2-config=/opt/local/bin/xml2-config

(or something like that)

A further update. I discovered that you do not just want to rename the libraries that were previously mentioned. You will later have problems starting Inkscape. Without the library provided by the Inkscape installation, the program will not start. I tried replacing them with symbolic links to the updated libraries provided by MacPorts and that did not work. If you make the changes after Inkscape is started then the extensions work, but the next time you open Inkscape you will get errors. Somehow, the extensions must be pointed at the libraries that MacPorts provides without messing with the existing library files provided with Inkscape.

Expected cost of OS X Snow Leopard full version

Postby davisjackson » Tue Jul 14, 2009 10:34 pm

I have a MacBook running Tiger. I would like to go to Snow Leopard when it is released to take advantage of the smaller footprint and better efficiency. I would like to take the most cost efficient route for my upgrade. I know that Leopard owners can upgrade for $29. I also know that I can get Leopard new for under $100 now that it has been out a while. That combo would allow me to get from Tiger to Snow Leopard for around $130.
Does anyone remember how much the full version of Leopard was when it first came out? I ask because I'm considering buying Leopard now at it's reduced price then upgrading to Snow Leopard for $29 since I think the total cost will be less than the full version of Snow Leopard which I expect to be $150 or more.
Please let me know your opinions on this.

Leopard cost $129 at release (now sales have put it closer to $95).

The $29 (sale at $25) Snow Leopard is actually a full install and will upgrade Tiger according to Engadget.
