Let say that I want to make a rectangle and pattern fill it with polka dots. Is it possible to convert a pattern fill back to vector after you have applied it? Or is it just a image that is constrained by the rectangle?

I don't think you can do what you want. Is this to get around the fact that pattern fills won't convert to PDF? I think this would be a worthy request.
