Active Zoom....

Postby David Hewitt » Sat Jan 31, 2009 8:59 am

I made reference to this in other post with respect to this possibly being done via a slider ETC (this is not so much my assertion here)...
More that in respect to zooming generally why not develop real time active zooming?

Has anyone played any 1st person shoot-em up? I realize that these are all utilizing activeX etc....
but all the games these days have the ability to have hugely complex 3d scapes... way more complex than any one design you could consider with respect to a vector app like inkscape...

Yet with this technology they are able to zoom in-in real time so as to truly immerse one into the scape itself...
I realize were talking about a 2D graphic here - but the same concept ie the ability to zoom in "Telescopically" like you are a bird swooping in on your design with full render in real time (like these 3d games) would totally transform the feel of inkscape....this would be an awesome thing to be able to achieve for inkscape....
I know this would probably have to be a view option so as not to hinder those with average video cards ETC...
But still with the pace of technology these days i would say a very worth while thing to start developing and a possible big poster feature.

And besides any arguments with respect to its merits generally... it would be mightily impressive.

Not only is this awe inspiring but it also mimics nature and is very intuitive....(if not very difficult to code and quite graphics intensive, but when even your average game these days doing this....why not a professional vector app like inkscape......be the first.....

Can we get some coders commenting on this?

There's a zoom option in the lower right corner of the inkscape windows. It doesn't have a slider, but if you hover your mouse over it and roll your mouse wheel you get the same level of control.

hey thats really cool........

Can you do that with blur and opacity...?
i would love it if you could have 2 little boxes like that up the top where you could adjust them without having to go into the stroke and fill dialogue....

do shortcuts exist for that too...?

Yeah. It works on all those UI elements (such as colour selection as well). Although I did find that it doesn't work properly on C (in CMYK) and S (in HSL)--bugs I suspect.

Opacity has a control at the lower left that is always accessible.

Hey, I didn't know that :D

I always used Ctrl + mouse wheel at the "center of interest" in my drawing, but that changes the zoom level by 8% each "click" which is often way too course.

Thanks Micro!!

You can change that 8% to something else in Inkscape preferences ;)

No doubt, but sometimes 8% is perfect, sometimes it isn't and now I have two ways to control the zoom factor.
