Change the overall colour of an object

Postby parker13 » Tue Nov 06, 2007 11:29 am

Hi,

If I start with an image which contains lots of stepped gradients, is there a way of changing the overall colour of the object without editing each and every gradient? Here's an example:

Can I easily convert this image:

...into this one:

Thanks.

I havent tried this but maybe you can play with one of the color effects, maybe

Effects > Color > Replace color...

Thanks, but I don't have the option "Effects > Color > Replace color...".

I'm on Inkscape version 0.45 (Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10).

Do I need a later version for that?

Ah yes, sorry I forgot to check, I am using one of the recent builds (they are used for testing and debugging), the version 0.46 isn't ready to be released yet

But you can play with the other colour effects you have in 0.45, they also work great and they're probably even better for your problem than what I first suggested ;):

I'd try More Hue (maybe apply it several times to get a bigger colour shift) or Removing one of the colours (Remove Green or Remove Blue). And there's also the Custom... option, read more about those here http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... Color.html

Great - if I use the color effects "Remove Green" and "Remove Blue" and "Darker", I get just the dark red effect I want.

Sorry, I'm so used to working in the Gimp and applying filter layers to do this kind of thing that it's hard to get into the Inkscape frame of mind.

Thanks again,
Garry.

It happens to me too if I work in one field for a while and then switch to the other (vector/raster) but overall I've found that Inkscape is the most intuitive and easy to use of all editors I've tried, it takes the least time to get back in the saddle.

The best thing for this would be the tweak tool, color paint mode:

If you're prepared to use a development version of 0.46 you could also draw a shape over the image and change its blend mode to influence the colour of the image below... hope that makes sense.

The easiest way to get color variations is Effects->Color->More Hue (or Less Hue for the other direction).

The one on the very left is the original and then it's just more hue, more hue etc. :)

For a color transformation exactly like your example... I don't know. I would need some trial'n'error to figure it out.

Great idea! I've tried it and it works, although you do need some basic understanding about those blending modes to be able to predict the result.

lots of great new features in 0.46, steep learning curve
