I can not find in inkscape 0.48 how to operate this extension.
the "Effect>Modify Path>Path Deform" does not exist.
Does anybody knows how to do 'Pattern along Path'?

You can find it under Path > Path effects editor, and under Extensions > Generate from path. I guess Path deform was its starting name.

Got it.
It is under Extensions->Generate from path->pattern alone path
The extension that is in inkscape makes a flip image (which can be corrected easily, You may look in the attached file that I downloaded from http://math.univ-lille1.fr/~barraud/Inkscape/pathdeform/ and modified it).
