[SOLVED] Gradient and blurring not converted to PDF

Postby avamk » Thu May 07, 2015 1:37 am

(crosspost from reddit.com/r/inkscape, hope that's OK?)

I have Inkscape 0.91 r13725 installed on my fully updated Fedora 21 system. I recently saved an Inkscape SVG file as a PDF 1.5 file (for printing to a poster) and noticed that my gradients (rectangular boxes with partially opaque black fill to fully transparent blurred edge) show up as no gradients or blurring in the PDF, instead it is just a solid black box.
Is this a limitation of PDF? Or is there something I am doing wrong in Inkscape that's preventing the gradient from carrying over into the PDF? Thanks!

Hello
I'm on Ubuntu. I haven't had the chance to try that design.
- A quick idea: Put a white rectangle as a background of all your art.
- Check the "rasterize filters" option when exporting to PDF

Post a sample file, to see better what are you talking about, or give it a test in other system.
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

3.- If you manage to solve your problem, please post here your solution.

I have the same problem... Here are the files (svg, png export, pdf export)
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing
There is white shape on top with opacity 60 and blur 4. Everything looks fine when exported to png but the shape disappears in pdf export...
The pdf export is with "rasterize filters" checked of course...
It is Inkscape 0.91r on Linux Mint 17.2 64bit
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Did you follow the discussion above, and try to determine whether you might solve the problem with that solution?

I think I see the 60 % white "circle" (well actually very pale orange), in the SVG file. But I don't know why it didn't come through in the PDF. There are a few bugs with converting SVG to PDF. I don't see anything that might be causing this problem though. As far as I can tell, it should convert without any problems. Well actually, let me just try it with your SVG file....

Hhm, I have the same result. But I don't know why. Hopefully someone else can figure it out.

Oh....maybe because the "circle" object (which is really a rectangle with a circular hole in it) is outside the page border? I did use page size, rather then object ID. I'll test that theory....

Yeah, I think that's it. Draw a rectangle the same size as the page. Either snap it to the page border, or align it to the page border. Select it and the pale orange object, and do Object menu > Clip > Set. Then export to PDF. At least that works for me.
