How do I get the top left hand corner of my page to be at 0;0?

This doesn't work in Inkscape as of now. The 'coordinate switch' is a long-term project which requires a lot of code to be moved around. User-customized coordinates will probably only come after that. The developers know about the problem :)

Instead of all the coding - would allowing a negative ;y - not be a simple solution.

Not with the current code, as far as I understand, no. But that's really a development discussion, and I'm not an Inkscape developer.
