Filters are not applied when exporting/printing

Postby SIO » Thu Aug 30, 2018 10:15 pm

Hello,

I've encountered a problem with exporting/printing complex SVG files made with Inkscape: most filters applied to objects are being ignored and the results are far from what's expected. I use Inkscape 0.92 (64-bit) on Windows 7.

I've tried to narrow the problem down to the smallest possible data set. Example SVG contains a bitmap (photo) that's been clipped, zoomed and transformed with Feather filter. Upon export to any format (or printing directly to printer) that photo goes missing. Even exported SVGs do not show that photo when opened with any application other than Inkscape.

Please suggest a workaround/fix for this problem. I've noticed it only when the whole file was ready and I would very much like to avoid redoing it from scratch :)

Thank you!

Hi.

The feather filter upon opening your svg doesn't get rendered. Sort of.

Because in reality, it does work as it was set. Opening the filter with the filter editor it shows the blur filter primitive in the chain is set to 100% -that won't produce feathered edges.
That's the gist of it.

In general, the feathering in the filter is achieved by blurring which is percentage based.
Unlike a border that you can set in a defined px value, percentage of blurring will result in random feathering distances on different sized objects.
My guess is, you applied the filter and then added in some transformation -scaling, resizing object to page etc. Which can also interfere with the appearance of the filters.

So what would I suggest? Using gradients instead.
Because filtering needs to be rasterized when saving as pdf -which is preferred for printing.
And because masking has hardly any right support too.
