multiple items on the clipboard?

Postby brynn » Tue May 31, 2011 8:06 pm

Hi Friends,
I've long wished that the Windows' clipboard provided an option for containing more than one item. Say for example, a clipboard button which produces a small dialog with 5 to 10 choices. Or a context menu for the Paste button. Or....I don't know if the Cut, Copy, Paste context menu could have a context menu assigned to the Paste item??? Well anyway, something like that. (That said, I may not be long for Windows....but that's another story.)

Anyway, I wonder if it would be possible to give Inkscape such a feature? Or if anyone else would even find it helpful?

For the image I'm working on at the moment, I'm constantly copy/pasting the color codes in the Fill/Stroke dialog. The context menu:

has 2 items that I've not seen elsewhere, i.e. - Input Methods and Insert Unicode Control Character. Under the first, are several different options. Most appear to be associated with different languages, but one is "Multipress". I don't suppose that mean that multiple items can be put on the clipboard? Yeah, I really doubt it

I'm thinking that particular context menu comes from Windows, and that even if the Inkscape clipboard could be made to hold several items, this one couldn't be changed, because it's really from Windows. But then those last 2 items, as I said, I've never seen elsewhere, so I'm assuming they are there because of Inkscape. So to me, that leaves a glimmer of possibility that it might be possible.

But my main question is whether this would be possible, and whether anyone else would find it helpful?

Thanks :D

Good idea Brynn, seems I have seen this kind of feature in word processing apps - a clipping file feature where frequently pasted items are stored. Maybe one could copy drag an object or value to a "clipping palette" that could build up elements in it without affecting the xml at all, i.e. the contents vanish when the file is closed - or when it's specifically cleared.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Oh yeah, that's very clever! I love drag and drop. The word "clipping" might be a bit confusing though??

By "...without affecting the xml at all..." do you mean that it would make such a feature easier to create?

Off topic:
AAAiii, I wish I could learn how to code for Inkscape...even just to write extensions. It just seems like such a monumental goal. Does anyone know of a way to learn in bits and pieces, rather than just start at the beginning and plow through it? If I could break it down into little packages of lessons, I think I could eventually get there. But plowing through it.....yeah, I'm getting older now, and my memory isn't as dependable as it used to be. Image

Maybe there's a book, and I could go a chapter at a time?? Maybe I'll do some searching....
