New GTK version fixes support for Wacom Bamboo

Postby microUgly » Fri Jun 06, 2008 1:00 pm

The new version of GTK corrects a bug with Wacom Bamboo tablets. The new GTK version will be included in future builds of Inkscape (dev version of 0.47 and perhaps 0.46.1).

If you can't wait until then you can upgrade your version of Inkscape like so (as suggested on the mailing list)
  1. Whilst not running Inkscape, go to your Inkscape installation folder (i.e. c:\Program Files\Inkscape) and rename the file, libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll, to libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll.bak.
  2. Now download these these two files and save them into the Inkscape installation folder
    1. https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlibs/bin/libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll
    2. https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlibs/bin/libpng12-0.dll
Note that I've only tested this so far as to confirm that Inkscape will open after making these changes. If you run into any problems, delete the files and rename libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll.bak back to libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll.

Hi all! I was having the same problem with Bamboo hanging in Inkscape AFTER I updated my Wacom driver. I downloaded the dlls, only the renaming didn't work for me (got an error that it could find the file), so I simply put the dlls in the Inkscape folder, and though it helped some after this fix, it still had a tendency to hang until I downloaded the latest GTK 2.12+ package, and it seems to be working better...not exactly hang proof, but better. Thought I'd pass on the info.

Will this work for Graphire 4s?

The original fix was done by someone using a Graphire 4, and the fix has been reported to work on other Wacom tablets too. Whether the form of the fix described by microUgly works is not so clear, as the only report we have on it is the one from Quiche Loraine above, who seems to have had less than perfect results.

No, it's only for Windows. The problem it fixes only occurs on Windows, as far as I know.

Works perfectly for me using microUgly's technique. Been waiting for this for ages, so many thanks for the fix.

For the record :-

Inkscape 0.46
Wacom Bamboo
Win XP Professional

This might seem silly, but it's something I've done myself a couple of times, make sure you don't have you pen resting near the tablet creating interference with your mouse.

Thank you for this solution. It is also effective under Gimp.

Hi all, I'm new to the forum.
I like very much Inkscape and I own a Bamboo Fun Tablet running on a PC/WinXP-SP3 and I would like to use it with this fantastic program. I tried to replace libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll with new one and add libpng12-0.dll to the Inkscape installation folder. Unfortunately in this manner the program does not run showing that libgio2.0_0.dll was not found. I think there are some problems with dependencies but I am not a programming expert... Can anyone help me?
Thank you all!
Francesco

Do you mean libgio-2.0-0.dll? If so, you could try the copy here: https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlibs/bin/libgio-2.0-0.dll.

I insert libgio-2.0-0.dll as you indicate, program shows an other error so I add libglib-2.0-0-dll too.
Now it finally works and I can enjoy my tablet with Inkscape  !
Thank you very much!
Ciao,
francesco

where did you get the file libglib-2.0-0.dll?

All the above-mentioned libraries are in the same directory: https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlibs/bin/

So here is the libglib .dll file: https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlibs/bin/libglib-2.0-0.dll

Should Bamboo tablets be working with the development version?

It doesn't seem to for me (I am using inkscape 0.46+devel r21066, built Apr 6 2009). I can't seem to draw anything with any of the tools, but I can select the menus ok with the tablet. Mouse works just fine, I don't see any error messages.

I tried downloading the dll's above in the thread, but the behavior was the same (I think they may be the same version as I have anyway). My tablet works ok on the stable release 4.6 after I edited one of the dll's in a hex editor (I forget the specifics, but it was a recommended solution at the time).

I did try copying my existing 4.6 libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll overwriting the development version, but this gives an error when I start Inkscape:
inkscape.exe - Entry Point Not Found
--------------------------
The procedure entry point gdk_app_launch_context_get_type could not be located in the dynamic link library libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll.

Edit: After I posted this, the tablet stopped working in my stable release 4.6. Found out that it seems to work ok if I turn off pressure sensitivity in the preferences (in both stable and development releases). I think I should report this as a bug, but I just wanted to check to see if I'm doing something stupid first.

I noted in the development build that the Stylus mode will display "screen" when it's actually "disabled" - viewtopic.php?f=29&t=3054#p14219

To change it, select the other item in the device list, then switch back. You should then be able to change the mode from disable to screen.

Thanks microUgly - that's exactly it. Now my pen works and with pressure sensitivity, in the dev build, I can switch between tools just by flipping the stylus from pen to eraser. I'm dead chuffed (that's good) :)

Sorry I didn't find that thread, which described my problem exactly. I think I'd been searching with "bamboo", thinking that it was related to my tablet.

That's fair enough, you can find very few reports from anyone saying that other tablets aren't working with Dev builds, and Bamboo previously never worked. So it was fair to think it was just your Bamboo having problems.

Ok lets just make a little conclusion to this year long post, because i was kind of confused going post by post changing files.
If you have a wacom bamboo that freezes in the artboard under win xp

you have to substitute:
libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll with https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlib ... -2.0-0.dll
libglib-2.0-0.dll with https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlib ... -2.0-0.dll

and add
https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlib ... ng12-0.dll
https://svn.modevia.com/inkscape/devlib ... -2.0-0.dll

back up all files (the ones you overwrite)

thanks for your help

If you wait not much longer it, you should find the Bamboo works in 0.47 without manually updating the GTK now.

The fix posted here works for my Graphire 4 but it did create a new issue: The two buttons on my pen are now reversed (the top button does what the bottom should do, the bottom button does what the top should do). It's not a problem for me, I just thought it may be worth mentioning. This is with version 0.46 on Windows XP Home SP3 with the latest Wacom driver (5.1.1-1).

GTK for anything other than Linux sucks. The Inkscape developers should have gone with a real cross-platform solution from the beginning. I had a whole post on this here, but no one ever replied.
