HPGL/PLT on Mac OS X

Postby TomCE » Fri Dec 14, 2012 7:29 am

Hello all, first post here.

I am running Inkscape 0.48.2 on OS X 10.6.8 - been using it for the last few months. Frustrating at first, but I'm enjoying it now! :D

I have an SVG I have created in Inkscape that I need to get to a guy to engrave a metal panel. His machine runs g-code. He wants me to send him DXF (R12), or, failing that, HPGL/PLT.

I am half-way (he says, optimistically...!) through making a proper installation of UniConvertor and sK1. Currently my installer is making a good go of installing sK1, but is failing with errors relating to FreeType header files, specifically freetype/config/ftheader.h and freetype/fterrors.h. 'No such file or directory', the installer reckons - but they are there. Most odd...

Has anyone here had this problem? Also, does anyone know how to register on the sK1 forum? I have contacted them a few times via their contact page, but with no response. Unless I am being exceptionally daft, there seems no way of registering directly via the forum itself.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Tom

Welcome Tom!

I probably can't help here. But does FreeType refer to a font format? Windows users are having trouble with fonts in Inkscape, starting a few days ago with the last packages of updates. I wouldn't think that should affect your Mac system. But after looking up Uniconverter, I see that it converts Corel Draw files. And we do know that Corel products have been affected by this same issue with the last Windows Updates. I don't know whether I'm making appropriate connections in all this, or whether they have nothing to do with this problem.

If so, Windows users can simply uninstall the update. But with this affecting Corel products, I'm not sure what to advise for a Mac system.....if this indeed is the source of the problem.

It's entirely possible that I've made some inappropriate connections through my train of thought. And if so, I truely do apologize! If that's the case, then kindly please ignore this message. ....except for the welcome -- I'm certainly sincere with the welcome :D

Hi.

Inkscape is capable of saving your drawing in HPGL and DXF directly without any use of "Unitconvertor or sk1".

You have to convert the text (and other non-path objects) to path before saving in HPGL or DXF format.
Just use "Save as" and then select correct output format.

To have a look at your DXF file you can use the free CAD program Draftsight - http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/ ... d-software.

By using an extension Inkscape can also create G-Code. See this link: http://www.cnc-club.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35

Good Luck

Cheers ragstian, did as you suggest. Waiting for the panel man to say if he could read the file OK. Will look into the g-code extension.

Thanks,

Tom
