Arbitrary styles in a single text box?

Arbitrary styles in a single text box?

Can anyone get this to work? See the left part of:

I can select a single word in a text box and if I then go to the Fill and Stroke dialog,
it lets me change the color of the word, but back on the canvas, the color has not
changed.

I've tried "Convert to Text" (whatever exactly that does), Flow into Frame,
Unflow...

Never mind. I had View in "Outline" mode to check something else. Grr.... :)
