But I ALWAYS have it enabled. After switching in OFF and then ON again, the problem disappeared
Although I am glad this problem is solved, how can this be possible? I must have done something stupid

I don't know what it could have been, but I'm glad it seems to be resolved.
One thing to be careful about with snapping, is having all or a lot of options enabled at the same time. It's especially imortant if any of the controls in Document Properties > Snap are set to "Always Snap". Those controls affect what I call the strength of the snap. Actually it controls the distance you need to be from the snap target, for the snap to happen.
But for example, if you have Snap to Objects set for "Always Snap" (which really means 'snap from anywhere') and on the canvas you have an object at each corner of an imaginary triangle, and another object in the center of that area -- when you try to move that center object, as soon as it's selected, it's trying to snap to all 3 objects (in 3 directions) at the same time. Add a grid to that (also set to "Always snap") and I've had exactly the experience you had.
When I disabled the grid (or disabled snapping to a grid) that solved it. But I also changed the options in Doc Prop, so that Snap to Objects is set at 20, to prevent the problem in the future.
Edit
I can't speak for td, but I think he thought you might have had the object in a group, with other objects. I thought that was possible too. If you were repeatedly clicking on it, you might have entered the group by accident (which normally happens with a double-click). Then you would have been able to select the object, separately from the the rest of the objects in the group.
When the Selection tool is engaged, the status bar tells you what kind of object is selected. So you could look at it, and know it's a group.
