Hi-
I created this as an entry for the August contest over at the Cartographers' Guild (and won!).
It is intended to be used as a transparent "compass rose" to be placed on a modern map image to show the mar cardinal directions. It was completely made in Inkscape.

Re: Modern Compass Rose
Congrats! Nice image too, very clean. love the highlight.
Re: Modern Compass Rose
Wow, there's a forum for cartography enthuisiasts!? Now I've seen everything That aside, really nice work. I imagine the compass looks quite neat over a map.
Re: Modern Compass Rose
Well done, it's a realy nice image !

heh! I think if you can imagine it, there is a web community that caters to it.

Something about your compass rose makes me want to eat it. Or touch it. Or rub it all over my maps. It's very nice, and I like this more technical stuff.
Re: Modern Compass Rose
So realistic looking. Very nice job

Really nice work, very realistic! Thanks for sharing the link to the Cartography Guild, some of the maps were beautifully drawn.

So cool - what was your method for creating the little radial ticks all the way around the inside of that circle? I had to do that recently and I ended up moving the point of rotation to the center, changing the rotation snap to angle, and copy&pasting a lot...so I'm curious.

Pretty close to the way you did it, except instead of copy and paste, I just used the spacebar to stamp copies as I went around.
The other thing I have done when wanting a radial pattern that doesn't match the angle snap is to use create tiles clones. Group your shape with a transparent large object (a circle works well) thats center is where you want your object to rotate about, then create tiles clones of the group, making the shift offset -100%, and whatever you want in the rotate offset.
