Modern Compass Rose

Postby RobA » Fri Sep 21, 2007 5:26 am

Hi-

I created this as an entry for the August contest over at the Cartographers' Guild (and won!).

Image

It is intended to be used as a transparent "compass rose" to be placed on a modern map image to show the mar cardinal directions. It was completely made in Inkscape.

Wow, there's a forum for cartography enthuisiasts!? Now I've seen everything ;) That aside, really nice work. I imagine the compass looks quite neat over a map.

Something about your compass rose makes me want to eat it. Or touch it. Or rub it all over my maps. :D It's very nice, and I like this more technical stuff.

Really nice work, very realistic! Thanks for sharing the link to the Cartography Guild, some of the maps were beautifully drawn.

So cool - what was your method for creating the little radial ticks all the way around the inside of that circle? I had to do that recently and I ended up moving the point of rotation to the center, changing the rotation snap to angle, and copy&pasting a lot...so I'm curious. :geek:

Pretty close to the way you did it, except instead of copy and paste, I just used the spacebar to stamp copies as I went around.

The other thing I have done when wanting a radial pattern that doesn't match the angle snap is to use create tiles clones. Group your shape with a transparent large object (a circle works well) thats center is where you want your object to rotate about, then create tiles clones of the group, making the shift offset -100%, and whatever you want in the rotate offset.

Wow-

I sound like the latest heathex screencast: http://screencasters.wordpress.com/2007 ... e-a-clock/

Talk about coincidental timing!
