Hi all, this is my first post,
i came here because i learned vectors in Illustrator and Coreldraw, i met inkscape and i loved the way it does many things and by now i use it regulary and have left the other programs aside
the only thing that still makes me go back to these other programs is that i cant work with big projects in inkscape due to one little but awkward thing...
The layers dialog is not the best tool when you have lots of layers with lots of objects and groups and you need to select some of them separately or when you need to select or use objects that are difficult to reach like under bigger objects or inside several groups...
when you are in Illustrator you have the layers and in a tree way you can see the groups and objects in the layer and its really usefull as it has a check to make a selection of individual objects in every layer/group the same as in CorelDraw.
I was adviced once to use the XML tree but it is not very intuitive to use specially for graphic designers and even worse for people comming from Adobe's world, and even if one learns to use it its not confortable to have an extra window floating on your screen to do better selections on layers when there is already a "Layers" dialog.
I have checked in the forums and bug tracker of Inkscape and have not found a lot of mention of this except for a couple of requests that partially mention what i just said.
So i wanted to expose the idea here to get some support and ideas before posting the request in the bug tracker in launchpad as a Wishlist
I suppose as there is already the XML tree it would be easier to make the layers dialog to reflect the structure of the document in a more usable way using a GTK tree
What do you think? Would it make sense to ask for this feature for a future comming release??
Thanks for reading, i appreciate the feedback
I attach some pics of the object/layers explorer of Illustrator and CorelDraw to make my idea clear just in case someone has not used them, i like the illustratod ones the most.
Adding Objects and Groups to Layers Dialog
Re: Adding Objects and Groups to Layers Dialog
Hi jeruki,
Welcome to InkscapeForum!
Wow, I would LOVE to see such a feature! And I believe it has been requested, although I understand that your search did not reveal it. I seem to recall reading that it's already in the plans, but that might be just wishful thinking, lol!
I made a different feature request, which would help enable difficult and/or repeated selections: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/695940. And at that time, was informed about this similar one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170515
But your idea has additional benefits, besides selection. Especially the orgainizational detail appeals to me

As far as I know "Adding Objects and Groups to Layers Dialog" has been repeatedly and in various forms and variants been requested as feature in the bug tracker (most are linked to this (yet generic) blueprint) and is a well known feature request.
Re: Adding Objects and Groups to Layers Dialog
ok yeah i see them, as you say the features are requested in a very spread way, some want sublayers and others want objects and others want selection but only a few request all of them, anyway i see the subject is on the table is a matter of waiting
thanks for the answers
