Stretching without scaling

Postby jeffrey » Tue Sep 22, 2009 3:27 pm

I use InkscapeLite 0.36 (with Puppy Linux). I'm trying to draw a plan of my home with walls and fixtures. Perhaps Inkscape isn't the best tool, but it would be more effective if I could do:
1. Stretch a wall length (which is a simple rectangle stroke with no fill) without increasing the width (which is easy) or thickening the stroke (which is not). Is there a way to do this?
2. Set an overall scale so that the page width equates to 20m (or whatever) and create items with using their actual measurements (rather than having to work out a scale and use a calculator to scale to the Inkscape size).
Perhaps this has been asked and answered already but I can't see it on the Web or in the documentation.
Thanks in advance.

Both can be solved quite easily.

1. There's an option that can be toggled. In the development version of 0.47 that I'm using this option is accessible from the front-end GUI. In 0.46 you press CTRL+SHIFT+P, go to Transforms and deselect "Scale stroke width";
2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D. This allows you to set the page dimensions to whatever you like. Due to zoom limitations it may be wise to use 2 meters instead of 20, or even centimeters instead of meters. Zooming in works better than zooming out.

That's "Document Properties". On that screen, you will also want to set "Default Units" to "m".

Thanks.
Looks like I need to upgrade to the full Inkscape...
