[solved]Image into rounded frame

Postby vetoenligne.fr » Fri Oct 17, 2008 2:49 am

Hello,

I'm beginigng with inkscape and I used to work with adobe softwares. I'm trying to insert an image into a frame with rounded corners as I used to to with Indesign.

I didn't find topics on such a fonction in the forum (but I may not have used the good terms, English is not my mother tong)

Do you know if that is possible as Inkscape is more a vectorial drawing software wherease Ingesign is more a pagination programme.
If yes is there any tuto/topic ?

Thanks

Well, what is your intended format for output? Inkscape can insert an image into a frame but if you save your work as pdf/eps then it wouldn't be saved properly.

There's two ways of inserting an image into a rounded frame (Could be a more easier and efficient way of doing it, but I only know of two ways).

1. Import the image by going to 'File -> Import'
2. Scale the imported image with the :tool_selector: tool until you are happy with the size of the image
3. To make the frame, pick the :tool_rectangle: or :tool_ellipse: tool and draw a shape over the image.
4. OPTIONAL: Usually, the shape you draw will have a fill. When you draw the shape, select it and look at the bottom left of the inkscape window, theres two boxes that say 'Fill' and 'Stroke', your Fill colour will be visible next to the Fill. Right click on the Fill colour and select 'remove fill'. This will remove the fill and make it easier to align the frame over the image. However, it could be that your shape might not have a stroke (and thus become completely invisible), if so, then at the bottom of the inkscape window, there is a palette of colours. Hold shift and click on any one of them, and your shape will have a stroke of that colour.

Method A: Patterns
5. Select the image with the :tool_selector: tool and go to 'Object -> Pattern -> Objects to pattern' (Alt + I)
6. Select the newly drawn shape and go to "Object -> Fill and Stroke' (Shift + Ctrl + F)
7. A new dialog will open up, in it, look for the "Fill" tab
8. In the fill tab, near the top, there will be a row of buttons, one is flat-coloured, the other has a linear gradient, the next has radial gradient, and then there is a button with repeating shapes (moving your mouse over it will show the word "pattern"). Select the pattern button.
9. Usually, the image will automatically be selected and you'll see your image inside the shape that you drew. If not, then in the Fill and Stroke dialog, under the Fill tab, there will be a drop down list. In the list, there should be something like 'pattern2314' (or some crazy random number). Select it and then the image will show up.

Method B: Clipping
5. If you want an outline for your frame, then select the newly drawn shape (the frame) and go to Edit -> Duplicate (or hit Ctrl + D). This will make a copy of your frame.
6. Select both the frame and the image by clicking on the shape with the :tool_selector: tool and then Shift + Click on the image.
7. With both objects selected, go to 'Object -> Clip -> Set"
8. Now, all the area outside of the frame will be deleted. (The frame itself will also disappear, which is why if you want an outline of the frame, you have to make a duplicate of it as mentioned in step 5)

Thats all I think. Hopefully I didn't confuse you with my english.

Thanks a lot !

Your explanations were very clear. I just tried a minute ago.
Thanks for the keyboard shortcuts that were very hepfull to find the options in my non englsih version of inkscape.

Just another question.
For the moment your A and B solutions will fit my desires, but is there a "C option" to resize the image afterward. I remember it was to possible in Indesign (not sure for Illustrator)

Bye.

If you go with option B, you can double-click the object to "enter" the clip. You should then be able to select the image within the clip and transform it in much the same way as you can in Indesign.

Thaks.
in fact with the B solution, I had to go in the object menu > Clip > Unset So I could resize the image and/or the shape.

I just have to cole the subjet know.

Thank you, you both were very helpfull.

You can also resize the image with Method A (in fact, I believe it is actually easier)

Simply use the :tool_selector: tool to select the image and use the corner arrows to enlarge/shrink the image.
If you want to modify the frame, use :tool_rectangle: or :tool_ellipse: (whichever tool you used to make the frame) and move the corner points (they look like tiny squares on the outline).

You can do it without releasing the clip - http://www.microugly.com/inkscape-quick ... jects-clip
