I see that Inkscape can't save as .gif but can anyone reccommend a good way to convert the .png format to .gif? I have seen some command line, open-source options which I could probably get my head around but this isn't for me. I need to try to get a way for a blogger to convert .png images to .gif independently. My blogger isn't very tech savvy!
If .png to .gif isn't possible, then how about reducing the size of the .png image?
What I am trying to end up with is lots of poems written like this example: http://www.mezzomagazine.com/Pictopoem.html
Many thanks
Martin

Re: Convert .png to .gif
Wow! I could have sworn Inkscape could save as GIF....?? But I do not see it in the File type dropdown either.
I guess I would suggest the GIMP, another open source project, except it's for raster graphics. Unless you need a batch converter. In that case, I would suggest Irfanview. (both free)

Re: Convert .png to .gif
Zamzar.com's website has a SIMPLE easy to use interface for converting file types.. .png to .gif is supported.

Re: Convert .png to .gif
Thanks for that link to zamar. I had a go with it but the end result wasn't too good. I'm sure it does a reasonable job in other situations but this left the text very ragged. I'm beginning to think that I am going to have to go with using .png but in comparison to .gif files they always seem to be way bigger. There are quite a few of those on line file converters availble and I've been impressed with the one on Dynamicdrive.com although it still isn't too hot on quality.
I'm wondering whether to have a go with the GIMP but that's another wieghty program to install and get used to!

In fact, a PNG file can almost always be made smaller than an equivalent GIF file (except in the case of very small images, where GIF usually wins). But the PNG files that Inkscape produces are 24-bit colour with an alpha channel, which is something that GIF doesn't support at all, so any GIF produced from one of these PNG files is unlikely to be equivalent (the image will usually be degraded to some extent - as you are seeing with zamzar.com).
left the text very ragged
Is the background to the text transparent? If so, ragged edges in the GIF will be unavoidable, since GIF has only very primitive support for transparency.
