New Gradient Node is not active

Postby InkCat » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:17 am

I don't know if this is a bug or not.

when I am working with gradients, and "Add Stop" to a gradient, then move color sliders, the gradient node which actually changes is the first node (going from left to right). In fact, even when I am sliding a node I've been working on, it's the first node which will receive any subsequent color changes I make!

I do not see a logical or creative reason for it to be this way, which is why I think it's a bug. In most/many graphics apps, the most-recently created item is the one which is active, such that your next actions operate on IT; not on previous objects or nodes.

It would also be helpful for the active gradient node to be some color other than what the others are...this would make things much easier by alerting the user which node IS the active one. After I double-click a node, I see the Gradient Editor blink and reflect that node's color and settings, but the node itself doesn't change, which can lead to confusion, error and frustration.

Comments?

I can see the color change for the selected gradient stops - blue, otherwise they're white. What platform are you on and what Inkscape version do you use?

I guess it's a bug on MacOS, you can report it https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/

Maybe someone else can confirm it here?

Do you mean that when you add a node it's not automatically selected in the gradient editor but that you have to drop the list down and select it? That the first stop is always selected by default? That is the behaviour on Windows as well...
If you add it on canvas with the gradient tool you can then select it - or just select one of the points of the gradient and it should be editable in the fill stroke dialog but not in the gradient editor! also the fill stroke dialog shows the opacity for the gradient node not as the a value but always as the overall opacity (dialog bottom). however if you make a change in the a value slider the opacity slider moves along and then when you check the gradient editor the values have been updated even though that node was never selected... Not a debilitating bug (never crashes, touch wood) but just a little problem because the opacity is in percentage and not 0-255.
Also I can't add nodes to the gradient with the node tool any more :( although i can still drag and delete them!
Your mind is what you think it is.

Yes, that doesn't work yet in the new node tool, as mentioned in this mail on inkscape-devel Subject: Re: Fill and Stroke Panel Layout. I haven't seen a report in the bug tracker about this missing feature.

[ Edit="after getting some sleep…" ]
You say «I can't add nodes to the gradient with the node tool any more» - but this didn't work in Inkscape 0.47 either (from the Manual Page: "Some editing actions work when any of these tools is active, others work only with the Gradient Tool. "). So it would be a feature request not a bug to be fixed ;-)
