Hello!
This is probably a very simple thing.. I'm sure I did this before! But I've been trying to do this for over an hour and can't figure it out..
I have copied and traced an object over from Gimp. I deleted the original and now have the vector image. I want to move a separate part of the object which is not joined to another spot. In Illustrator I would just draw round it with the pointer to highlight it and drag it elsewhere. How do I do this???
I've tried ungrouping it.
Thanks for any help, and apologies for missing something simple here.

Select area of design or object and move it
Re: Select area of design or object and move it
Hello,
Inkscape it's not illustrator
In your special case, when tracing a bitmap, several paths are created. Those paths are combination of several subpaths. To move those subpaths you must break the combined path with Shift+Ctrl+K. But other problems may arise. Other way is select the nodes of the subpath and move them... but it's not as easy as moving an object.
Consult th guide in any case:
the Inkscape Guide

Re: Select area of design or object and move it
I find that the easiest way is to duplicate the traced path then draw a rough shape over the top of the part you want to remove or keep. Select both the rough shape and the duplicated path, then use Path > Difference to remove the part you've covered, or Path > Intersection to keep only that part. Move the result out of the way, then repeat for each part of the image you want to separate.
