I want to know : how to use special character, like math character or other special character?

On windows you hold down the Alt key and strike a combination of numbers on the keypad to create the character. For example, Alt+0169 creates ©. Is it different on Linux?

I hold down ALT key and press the combination of numbers, but not work.
Finally i found on linux: hold down CTRL+U and press the combination of numbers.
