Hi Friends,
Here I've come across another possible bug. Here's the file:
http://www.petaimg.com/uploads/1226424369.svg
(Sorry micro)
There are 5 blue petals, which were originally derived from circles, and they are grouped. I can't remember how many times I've tried, but it was a lot, to apply a radial gradient to the group. Every time, as soon as I clicked the radial gradient button in the F/S dialog, the petals disappeared.
I could apply any solid color to the group, but no radial gradient. I didn't test linear gradients.
I'm thinking I know that gradients can be applied to groups, why isn't it working. So I set up a circle and a couple of rectangles, as a test. I grouped them and applied a radial gradient. As you can see in the file, the gradient is only applied to the rectangles, and not the circle. As the strokes are all still visible, clearly this problem doesn't affect strokes (and my 5 blue petals have no stroke, which is why they seem to disappear).
So I'm wondering if there is some issue with radial gradients as a fill for grouped ellipses?
Or is it something particular to this file only?
I might mention that I looked around the canvas for evidence the gradient had been applied elsewhere, or that the petals had moved, because I've come across (and reported) several instances of that type of behavior. But I don't see them anywhere.
If anyone can find either the gradient or the petals elsewhere on the canvas, you might want to add a comment to this Bug #284709.
And of course I would appreciate any comments. Especially if this is somehow expected behavior, or a result of something I did.
Thank you very much
(no rush, micro)

Re: radial gradient applied to grouped ellipses - possible bug?
I think this is the same issue as you've reported before. The gradient is applied but is being translated to a different part of the drawing. To test, apply the gradient to the group, then enter the group and select just one of the objects and with selected zoom out and you'll see the node handles way over on the upper right of the canvas.

Whoa!
And I've just found another oddity, while following your instructions to find the displaced gradient.
If I apply a radial gradient to the 5 blue petals, at 1st they disappear, although the selection window and gradient handles remains in place. This is as far as I had gotten when I posted this topic. All indications are that it has been given the default gradient, which is the original color (opaque) in the center, and changing to fully transparent at the perimeter. But the gradient can't be seen, or the petals are invisible, or have disappeared, or whatever language is appropriate, I'm not sure.
Anyway, if I go and edit that gradient, by giving the transparent end of it any opaque color, the entire petals are showing that opaque color. No real gradient, but the handles, selection window and petals are visible. Weird!
And so if I then do as you suggest, and click on one petal with the gradient tool, I do see the gradient handles in the upper right part of the canvas.
However, I can't duplicate this with the sample group of 2 rectangles and 1 circle. If I click on either rectangle, the handles appear as expected. But if I click on the circle in that group, I get a selection window, but no handles. I wonder if it's possible the handles have moved completely off the canvas??
I guess I'll go and add a comment to the original bug? Speaking of that bug, no one has responded to it, even though it seems to me a fairly serious or at least important issue. Well, maybe with this now 4th comment, 4th file, reporting a 4th different tool that's affected by this, someone will notice it?
Thanks micro

Turn out it's my ISP. They use a proxy which is blocked by many sites because it's open to abuse. If I open the petaimg url via a different proxy it'll work.
