Print Scaling

Postby alexfwalker » Mon Nov 07, 2011 7:36 pm

Hello,

I'm trying to use Inkscape to print an SVG image, made up of a layer of text and an image layer. The image and text render together perfectly in Inkscape, so at first it seems like the perfect tool for the job.

However, the image is part of the output for a personalised gift. It is possible for each image to be printed on 3 different sized boxes, so although each image is generated at a consistent size, it could be printed at several different sizes - A3, A4, A6. Therefore it's crucial that whatever programme I use to print the image must have a way of scaling the print size. I don't have control over the initial image, so best to assume that this cannot be adjusted.

In Inkscape though I can't find any way to scale the print job. Is it not there, or am I simply not looking hard enough?!

Thanks,

Alex

I don't understand the part about the gift and the different sized boxes? Is the image like for gift-wrapping, and it needs to fit 3 different size boxes? Or are you printing directly on the box?

We have a website where we offer customers the ability to upload a photo, which they add a message to (which is where the SVG comes in - so we can marry up image and text). They can then choose to have this image printed onto 3 different sizes of box (hence the need for print scaling as the website generates the images at a consistent size). We don't print directly onto the box, but we print onto A3, A4 and A6 transfer paper which is heat pressed onto the box lid.

It's like Moonpig in a way. The problem has arisen though as we've moved to a new system where the images are output as SVG rather than just JPEGS.

Aaah, and now that I understand, I realize that I probably can't give you a very helpful answer. Unless you either convert to PNG (File menu > Export bitmap) and use the dpi to scale it, or it looks like in the Print dialog, the Rendering tab offers a similar option, I think you would have to use Inkscape to actually scale the image and change the page size according to the needed size box.

Someone else may have some other ideas?
