Need a hero to convert this file to EPS

Postby TheDestroyer » Thu Jan 19, 2012 12:58 am

Hello Guys,

I've drawn this schematic with Inkscape. I need to add it to my LaTeX document as EPS, not anything else.

Can you help me converting this to EPS? don't think it's trivial. It drove me crazy and I couldn't do it and retain its vector-image nature. I want it to remain as a vector image.

If I did something in the image that can't be converted to EPS, please let me know.

Thank you for any efforts.

Best regards,
Sam

Sorry! Thought you needed it in a hurry so I passed it through Adobe Illustrator. An alternative on weird problem eps stuff might be to save the svg out as a pdf file from Inkscape then use pdftops to convert that to an eps file. The command would be something like 'pdftops -eps filename.pdf'. Pdftops is a Linux command but I'm pretty sure there's a Windows binary floating around on the 'net. Of course you would use pdftops only when Inkscape cannot give you a satisfactory eps file on its own. Give it a try and compare the Illustrator eps to the pdftops eps.

Thank you a lot. I use linux for programming too, so I can give it a try.

Thanks again :-)

Works with Inkscape as well (tested with 0.48.2, out-of-the-box): save a copy as EPS file, using the default options. The created EPS file is pure vector (with embedded fonts). I don't really understand the issue at hand, and why your's apparently got rasterized. How did you come to that conclusion?

I haven't been able to look into this thoroughly yet. I'm at work on a Win7 (Ink version: 0.48.2) box at the moment. When I export the OP's svg file out of Inkscape and into an eps file I only get half of what's there. No text at all and some of the objects missing. I haven't tried this on my Linux box yet. Could be user error on my part...dunno.

Sorry - my bad (I need to better keep track of local patches [1]): yes, with cairo 1.10.2 (also included in the 0.48.2 version for Windows) the text is missing, due to an upstream bug in cairo (see also the bug report for Inkscape #813886). The bug is triggered by the imported diagrams, probably originally EPS files as well: the diagrams are clipped, and the cairo bug causes that clip to be applied to the remaining added objects as well (which of course are outside the visible area of the clip).

I fail to see any rasterized content though (as originally reported), even if the text part is missing.

[1] On one of my test systems, I have patched the stable cairo version (1.10.2) to test the fix provided by the cairo developer in the mentioned Inkscape bug report:

Hi All,

This is my first post so hopefully I don't make any faux-pas :?

My problem is very similar to the OP's. I need to export these figures as .eps so I can use them in latex. I have two problems:

1) When I render the eps, it appears rasterized. It seems to have lost it's vector format?
2) Worse, some of the text and lines look really bad compared to the rest
3) When I export as eps, the file becomes HUGE! my svg is 12 kb. The eps is ~600kb.
4) When I copy and paste everything from the original file into a new inkscape file and then render it, it's small again (70kb).

I'm on a mac with Inkscape Version 0.48. Should I also go to pdf->eps using pdf2eps or something? Any advice on any of this would be greatly appreciated!
