Hi, I'm writing my bachelor dissertation about "Usage of vector graphics in the mobile, responsive web design".
One point I'm writing about is vector programs and I wanted to ask; is there an official number of users using inkscape (no matter which OS)? That would be very helpful!

Zur Zeit schreibe ich an meiner Bachelorarbeit zum Thema "Vorteile und Nutzung von Vektorgrafiken im mobilen und responsiven Webdesign" und behandle dort in einem Abschnitt auch Programme und Auszeichnungssprachen zum Generieren von Vektorgrafiken (wie bspw. SVGs).

Dazu wollte ich einmal anfragen, ob es von Seiten der Inkscape Community offizielle Zahlen zur Nutzung von Inkscape gibt; also wie viele User weltweit das Produkt einsetzen (Betriebssystem ist hierbei irrelevant, kann allerdings auch aufgeführt werden).

Ich würde mich sehr über eine (zitierbare) Antwort freuen!

es gibt leider keine offiziellen Nutzer-Zahlen.

Zum einen deshalb, weil Inkscape nicht nur über die Inkscape-Webseite installiert werden kann, sondern unter Linux oft schon beim Betriebssystem mit dabei ist bzw. von den Paketservern der jeweiligen Distribution installiert wird. Auch das ppa (personal package archive, das ist eine Paketquelle, die man unter Linux einbinden kann und von wo dann das Programm immer aktuell installiert werden kann) auf launchpad.net zählt nicht die Zugriffe auf die Dateien. Von Linuxnutzern gibt es also so gut wie überhaupt keine Zahlen, obwohl (meiner ganz persönlichen Vermutung nach) wahrscheinlich auf einem sehr großen Anteil aller Linux-Desktop-Installationen ein Inkscape zu finden ist.

Zum anderen deshalb, weil die reinen Download-Zahlen leider nichts darüber aussagen, ob derjenige Inkscape dann auch wirklich verwendet, oder ob das Programm evtl. sogar mehrfach von derselben Person heruntergeladen wurde, oder von Bots.

Wenn Dir mit Download-Zahlen für die aktuelle Version schon geholfen ist, dann findest Du die aktuellen Daten für Inkscape 0.91 unter den folgenden Links angegeben:

There aren't any official numbers, no.

One reason being that Inkscape cannot only be installed via our website, but often is already part of basic Linux systems, or are downloaded by their users from the package servers of the corresponding distro. The ppa also doesn't count downloads.

The other reason being that the pure download numbers don't really tell you if the downloader actually uses the software or if they even downloaded the program multiple times, or if it was a bot.

Gern geschehn! Wenn die Bachelor-Arbeit fertig ist, freuen wir uns hier im Forum auch über einen Link - da gibt es bestimmt was Interessantes zu lernen (ich habe gerade meine eigene Webseite halbwegs 'responsive' gemacht, allerdings nur mit sehr wenigen Vektorgrafiken).

You're welcome! When your bachelor thesis is finished, we'd be curious to see a link - there are possibly a lot of interesting things to learn (I just made my own website half-way 'responsive', but only with very few vector images).

There are no official numbers. But my creative side wonders if there might be other indications, or parallel statistics, for how many people use Inkscape.

For example, I think we have number of downloads (from the Inkscape website and/or previously from Sourceforge), and I'm guessing number of downloads per operating system (with emphasis on "guessing"). If the admin for this forum keeps statistics (which is anyone's guess) there might be statistics like number of messages posted. Contacting the admin is the big problem with that. However, from the member list, you could determine how many people register, new members per month/year/whatever.

And I totally realize that these are not direct indications. But these, and if we're creative, we might come up with other "indications", could offer some illumination.

PS -- I suspect the development community might be very supportive, if you wanted to post on the dev mailing list, and present your issue. One or more developers might be interested in working together with you, and the results could be shared. (Assuming sharing doesn't violate any license of your dissertation.)

Although from Moini's German comments (which I can't read, but I recognize some of the links) she may have already put you on a path that relates to some of my comments?

Being from the US, and having only travelled outside the US for a day and a half (drove around Lake Superior) I've never heard of a dissertation requirement for a bachelor degree. Is this common in Germany or Europe (or elsewhere)? (Or maybe there's a different definition of "dissertation" or "bachelor dissertation") that I've never learned?) (Or maybe it's a translation that missed the target?)
