Using Extension "Restack" on Mac OSX 10.7 (Lion)

Postby spaelti » Tue May 22, 2012 7:37 pm

I had been using Inkscape on a Mac under OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and everything was working fine. Of particular importance to me was the extension "Restack" which I understand to be a Python script. After upgrading to Mac OSX 10.7 this no longer works. Instead I get the following message:
The fantastic lxml wrapper for libxml2 is required by inkex.py and therefore this extension. Please download and install the latest version from http://cheeseshop.python.org/pypi/lxml/, or install it through your package manager by a command like: sudo apt-get install python-lxml

I have tried visiting the websites mentioned in this message, but cannot find any useful/comprehensible instructions for help with this problem. How can I get "Restack" working again?

Known issue with the official Inkscape 0.48.2 package on OS X Lion:

Either wait until there are official packages of Inkscape 0.48.3.1 for OS X, or try to work around it using these instructions.

(Note 1: As described in those instructions, it won't work using Apple's TextEdit - you do need to use a real text editor without Apple's new 'Autosave' feature on Lion.
Note 2: it is probably best to install a copy of Inkscape into your Home directory for the workaround - following the steps with Inkscape installed into '/Applications' could fail in the end due to insufficient priviledges.)
