Hello, I see this forum needs the http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/8475 . It's easy to install and works very well.

There's a number of options to reduce spam on this forum. Perhaps the most fully featured option is http://www.lithiumstudios.org/forum/vie ... f=31&t=941. But I'm not in the mood to run through the process of installing and testing. The other option is for me to simply customise the captcha, this way the spammers will have to retrain their scripts specifically for this forum. Again, time is my problem.

I vote for Prime AntiBot, text based captchas are much much better than the image ones.

There's also http://recaptcha.net/plugins/phpbb/ but I don't like reCaptcha because it's hard on humans too.

Is it possible to turn on the requirement for approval on every account initially?
Seems like we'd very quicky be able to weed out the spam accounts that way.

There is an option to post anonymously, and that is the biggest source of spam probably. They do have to be approved by a mod first, so users aren't affected as much because they can't see unapproved posts, but mods have their hands full...

There is a captcha they have to fill in, but it's very weak (there are scripts that crack it), A Word based or Numbers based captchas might help (riddle captchas).

There isn't an option to force approval for young accounts, but the amount of spam from registered accounts is fairly minimal, at least in comparison to anon spam. So my goal will be to reduce anon spam, but what ever I do, it'll require modifying the standard code within phpBB3.

The recent household appliance spam is a little entertaining. I mean, I totally wandered onto the Inkscape forums to research kitchen sinks. :)

I think a riddle or picture CAPTCHA is a good idea; unless the spammers really are recent un-employees pushing pocket spam on their blackberrys in a Starbucks lounge.

For me, there's an implication that Inkscape users buy Designer Handbags, perhaps to keep their WOW gold in?

Microugly, would it be possible to change the default reason of "Report Post" to the "Advertising" option? I've never reported for any other reason, or seen a post that refers to "Pirate or illegal software", the current default.

It's not a setting but I agree that it should be default. I'll look at moding the order.

I haven't been flagging the spam because I figured microUgly reads all the threads anyway.
