inkscape on mac os x
Hello, I installed Mac OS X version of Inkscape but it doesn't work.
I'm getting the following message but after 1 day, it still displays the message and I can't launch the program.
Can someone guide me what I should do to launch the program successfully?
thanks,
js

Inkscape on Mac OS X
While Inkscape is open, its windows can be displayed or hidden by displaying or hiding the X11 application.
The first time this version of Inkscape is run it may take several minutes before the main window is displayed while font caches are bilt.

Re: inkscape on mac os x
I was having the same issue - launch Inkscape, dialog about first time run, dismiss that dialog, and Inkscape disappears...
Being new to Macs, I didn't realize that I needed to manually launch the X11 framework before launching Inkscape!
All's well, now!

Re: inkscape on mac os x
I had this problem with the most recent build. I tried a variety of different builds before trying to start it *directly* using X11. Before, it would launch, give an info message about processing fonts, and die almost immediately. When I launched *through* X11, it stayed open, and worked thereafter.
These are the steps I took to get it working (in Leopard):
1) Choose Finder -> Go to Folder -> /Applications/Utilities/
2) Double click the X11 icon. It'll be at the bottom. If you don't see it, you'll need to add it; you can get it here.
3) Once X11 is running, type "/Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/MacOS/Inkscape" at the prompt (assumes a standard install).
Inkscape processes for awhile, mulling stuff over, and then launches a new inkscape document window. Success! After this works, inkscape will start the normal way by double clicking the inkscape icon; it learns to invoke its own X11 instance.

Re: inkscape on mac os x
Unfortunately the above didn't work for me (MacBook Pro, Leopard). Running Inkscape from the xterm window causes the "first run" dialog to pop up for Inkscape, hitting "ok" in that window causes Inkscape to exit.
Re: inkscape on mac os x
Like a whole lot of other software which used to work with Mac OS 10.4 or lower, Inkscape is pretty broken with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Probably this is in part because Mac broke libraries and standards, and in part that Inkscape is not specifically trying to support Mac.

What specific libraries and standards would those be?
In any event there probably shouldn't be a link on the front page claiming a version for Leopard until it actually does support that particular version of OS X.

Agreed... I'm glad I was able to find this thread. I have loved Inkscape for a long time on my Foresight Linux system, but I'm frustrated that after my company moved me to using a MacBook Pro with Leopard (10.5) I'm having the aforementioned problems opening Inkscape with X11...
I have the same problem that jgerman mentioned whether I launch from the xterm or add it to X11's Application menu: I get that dialog box with just an "OK" button and no other way to close that box, and then Inkscape immediately exits after I click "OK." Using "top" simultaneously in a Mac terminal window, I watched the process launch and run as long as the dialog box was there, and then the process exited immediately when I clicked "OK" in the dialog box. I have yet to see a way around it on my Mac system.
Inkscape developers might want to find some way to remove the Leopard dmg download link from the site and from SourceForge (as it is also linked from some other Mac resource sites I found in searching for other vector graphic editing options).
/me misses my inkscape and hopes this is fixed soooooon
Re: inkscape on mac os x
Okay... so one thing that other sites don't tell you that Inkscape's site indicates is a need to replace Leopard's X11 with a different (newer?) X11 application... trying that now...

Well, that update to the X11 software worked...
As (only) the Downloads page on Inkscape's site says, Leopard users should update the X11 application to at least version 2.1.4... the latest is 2.2.0 and that's what I just installed. After that, I opened X11, opened Inkscape, and within a minute the font cache had processed and a new document was open. Unfortunately, though, others will be frustrated if they are not aware of this requirement; perhaps this version could have been packaged with a script to detect the version of X11 and provided an appropriate dialog box for users with a link for updates?
Re: inkscape on mac os x
I just seen there's a collection of FAQ's relating to Mac issues on the Wiki - http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... es_not_run
I'm posting this for reference of anyone else who might be having issues. The FAQ's may need updating for 0.46.

Re: inkscape mac osx not installing
Yeah I am getting the same issue. Installed the latest QuartzX thing (2.2.1) and Inkscape starts with the dialogue saying that it might take a while to cache fonts the first time but then nothing ever happens and X11 doesn't even start up. I don't know if you had an issue installing the QuartzX thing as well but I had to force restart.
There's same comments on versiontracker download about this as well.
Shame there doesn't seem to be any official word or help about it. I'd just finished proclaiming Inkscapes greatness over Illustrator... *backfire* "At least Illustrator loads" they say.
Leopard 10.5.2, QuartzX 2.2.1

Re: inkscape mac osx not installing
I looked at the bug report site (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/) and found some similar errors but not the same so I have submitted a new bug report. Please go and add details to this report so that it can get fixed ASAP:

Re: inkscape mac osx not installing
found some other pages which mention typing (into xterm and terminal) some prompts however no luck. No trouble loading the x11 update here. I will report the bug to the link you supplied.

Keep in mind, this isn't a support forum. If you're not getting solutions here, you should try the developers.
Re: inkscape mac osx not installing
control click inkscape. Click show contents. Go to resources. Then I just happened to click on a gray folder labeled "opendoc" then some script started running and in less than a minute inkscape opened to a new drawing page. From then was able to open it just by clicking on the inkscape icon. Answered my own question! Hope this helps others.

Re: inkscape mac osx not installing
The following suggestion from dementid works, but be sure to upgrade x11 to the latest rev, log out and log in, download inkscape, and follow these instructions:
