Inkscape is drawing a big red X and "Linked Image Not Found" box over an image I have in one of my inkscape drawings.
how do I make inkscape tell me what the image name is?

Select the image and the message in the status line tells you the path to the image and its name.
Alternatively, right-click the image and choose 'Image Properties' from the context menu. In the dialog, you can edit the path if you know where the image has been moved to - also described in Alexandre's article Inkscape: embedding or linking? | Libre Graphics World (scroll down to 'Relinking').

the path in the status line is pretty unwieldy, but the right click method produces wieldyness...if that's a word..
