[solved] Problem with exporting to PDF

Postby prospero » Wed Jul 30, 2008 6:37 pm

Hi all,
I’ve been using Inkscape to produce counter sheets for games quite successfully but when I export a completed sheet in PDF format the resultant PDF doc has distortions/aberrations in it when viewed, specifically, the sides of the counters (what was the stroke) suddenly becomes inconsistent in thickness – some are OK, whereas some stand out being a deal thicker.

However, the PDF sheet prints out fine and when I zoom in to the document real close the problem disappears. Is this normal or am I overlooking something?

I can live with it because I know despite what I see on the screen the sheet is actually OK, but it doesn’t look too good to other people whom I give the PDF to. I’m relatively new to Inkscape and still learning, so you must excuse my overlooking something very obvious as an explanation.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

How exactly are you creating the pdf? Are you using "save as .pdf", "print to .pdf", or some other method?

I am creating the PDF doc by 'save as' then selecting .PDF from the drop down menu.

I have used both 0.45 and 0.46 versions of inkscape and I have tried it on a separate computer but I get the same results (both computers are XP)

Can you share your SVG with us so we can examine the behaviour?

I'd gladly upload a SVG - but i can't work out how to do attachments - there doesn't seem to be any button for it!

I have uploaded one of my Inkscape SVG files (a counter sheet) at this link:

See what you think - it certainly baffles me!

I looked at the PDF you had created and it was no better for me!

So the problem is not Inkscpape but seems to be my PDF viewer (Acrobat 7.0)

I have also noticed that when i take a snapshot of the PDF image (saved as a PNG) it picks up the stroke/border abberation on the counters.

Anyway, many thanks for looking at this problem for me.

Oh, wait. I think I know what you're talking about now. You talking about the black border around each square? Acrobat sometimes shows it thick and sometimes thin. This is unavoidable and nothing to be concerned about. It's simply how Acrobat Reader chooses to handle fractions.
