Hi
I lost so much work yesterday since I forgot to save. I so do not want to go back to Illustrator, so I neeeeeeed to talk with someone who can fix an quick Autosave in the preferences menu. Just so it saves a file in the same folder as my file, and with "punt" so it is hidden in Ubuntu.
If the app crashes (and it does that allot on my Ubuntu), I will be able to find the last auto saved file. And/or the developer could ask the user if I want to revert to the last auto saved version. Who can I talk with?
I was really crying last night (had to meet an customer that I could not show what I worked with), so I neeeed this fix. And I just can´t wait until 0.5xxx until that feature because then I would need to go back to OSX , and I really don´t want that. I love the freedom of Ubuntu.
Autosave? I am losing time & money
Re: Autosave? I am losing time & money
Hi,
I sympathise with your problem, it can be terrible when you loose work - especially when you have an important deadline. You can contact the developers on the IRC channel (see the inkscape website, I can't remember off the top of my head). You could also file a bug report. Inkscape does save automatically when it crashes, usually in the home directory as a strangely named file (without an extension) - look in your home directory and see if there are any odd looking files there, then try to load them using the terminal and typing inkscape <filename> - when I try to load those autosave files through inkscape directly it never works.
You can try, and it would be great to get auto save properly polished in Inkscape, but I don't think that it would be developed instantly. Until it is developed, you could try setting an alarm on your watch (or using kalarm which ubuntu can install for you) to go off every 5 mins reminding you to manually save.
Also, which version of Inkscape are you using? If if crashes that often it would suggest you are using a new, testing/unstable build of inkscape. If you are, try going back to the stable 0.45 which should not crash so much.
good luck!

Well, KAlarm could do the trick, but the feature I want is soooo easy to make. Just a loop function that saves the document with an "punt" filename at the interval I choose.
I guess that it would take a computer science student about 5 minutes to build. Seriously.
And we ALL need it.
I can´t find how to contact the developers? How?

You can find details about a request for autosave on the launchpad site - https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171092
Sounds like you are putting up your hand — anyone can give up their time to contribute

Autosave was added today, so it should be in 0.47.

Would you mind doing me a personal favor and never say this phrase again? Unless you're a programmer quite familiar with the Inkscape code base, there's no way you could have an idea of how easy it would be. Seemingly simple things are often rather complicated when you get into the details. I could probably count on one hand the number of times a "5 minute feature" actually took 5 minutes or less to implement in my projects.
No offense intended to you, I just get annoyed when non-programmers assume something is "easy". Especially when the work-around for you actually is easy: hit Ctrl-S every few minutes.

Or build your own and get it today...
