1 question about pre-rendered (purchased) vector graphics

Postby chevroon » Thu Feb 18, 2016 4:38 am

I don't want to make vector art.
I just want to use Inkscape for one thing.
I want to be able to copy a single graphic, from vector art I have purchased, that has a bunch of different graphics on the same page.

For example, if a vector page has six different muscle cars, how do I separate the Chevy Nova from the other models?

I have watched hours of YouTube Inkscape tutorials, but they all deal with the creation side of vector art.

Can someone tell me which commands I need, to copy a single graphic, from the multiple graphics artwork for which I've already paid?

Sincerely yours,
Original TankGirl

Mostly I'd be using copy/paste, maybe it might require ungrouping for some stuff.

The tutorials in the Inkscape program are pretty good and don't take much time. Menu: Help>Tutorials
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

To give you a correct answer, we probably need to see the SVG file. But as tyler alluded, Ungroup is probably what you need. You may need to ungroup several times. But be careful that you don't ungroup too much.

It's also possible you might need to release a clip (Object menu > Clip > Release) or mask. And theoretically, you might need Path menu > Break Apart.

The status bar is your friend! Whenever you select something, look at the status bar to find out what kind of object it is. If it says it's a Group, you'll know you need to Ungroup. If it says something is clipped, you may or may not need to unclip/unmask.

And there's an outside chance it could be more tricky, like if there's a pattern involved, or something else.

Sorry for the "may or may not" and other vague stuff, but we really have no way of knowing how the file is constructed, without looking at it. If you can share it with us, we can tell you exactly what to do.

Good luck :D

Saw on istock the download format is eps and large jpeg is included -worst case the file has only an embedded jpeg inside the eps? Then you would need extracting it and use a raster editor instead. Or tracing it.

But noone can really guess how your file is structured.
