Connecting nodes?

Postby Beanjuice » Sun Oct 02, 2011 5:53 am

Can you connect midpoint nodes or an end node to a mid line node? I have tried but can only get end nodes to join sometimes but not consistently. Can you join multiple end nodes?

No. Inkscape's native file format is SVG, and the SVG specification does define paths such that a node can only connect to two adjacent nodes (i.e. max. two segments meet in a node).

Hi Beanjuice,
No, that's not possible with Inkscape.

You can simulate such a feature though. Using Snapping (Snap nodes and handles, snap cusp nodes and/or snap smooth nodes) you can position the nodes directly on top of each other. Then using the Node tool, select them by the so-called rubberband or selection box technique, i.e. draw a selection box around the "stack" of nodes. Then when you move the top node, all of them move with it.

Oops, hi ~suv! You sneaked in your post while I was typing mine :D

Both suv and Brynn are right and you cannot actually connect nodes in that way.
But I have found that a lot of people who wan to do this are happy with the results they get when they position the paths where they want and do a path menu-> combine.
Your mind is what you think it is.

You cannot form a T shape or an X with strokes.

However, you can simply take two strokes, make them cross and then if it is essential that they become one object, stroke to path and then object union. Or simply leave them as they are and use Combine as Druban said.
