[solved] Several usability questions.

Postby FooManChu » Fri Jul 27, 2007 11:29 pm

1. Is it possible to make Inkscape always open up fullscreen?
2. Is it possible to "clean" your current workspace?

To explain this, sometimes I get to mucking about and wind up with a screen full of garbage I don't plan on keeping. So, I do CTRL+A then DEL. (Select All then Delete)

I hate hitting CTRL+N. Sometimes when I have a thousand things open I don't want another Inkscape popping up.

*EDIT*

2b. In fact, is it possible that when you hit CTRL+N, it asks if you wish to get rid of the current document and then load a new one in your current Inkscape session?

*EDIT*

3. CTRL+O always seems to default back to C:\Program Files\Inkscape. Can I change this permanently?

I can change it during a session, and for that entire session it stays to what I set (via opening a file). For example, when I save a file, it stays with:

C:\Documents and Settings\FooManChu\My Documents\My Pictures

I'd like my open dialog to default to this too.

4. Is it possible to always have a specific document layout and/or dimensions?

For example, I always modify the document properties to 1600x1600.

Would I simply just edit the "default.svg" to reflect that?

Thanks for clarification on all these questions.

1. Do you mean maximised? if so then open the template, maximise and save and everytime you open inkscape it should go maximised. If you mean proper fullscrenn from f11 then I dont think you can currently.

2. Think Ctrl A, delete is the best you can do.

2b. Not currently as far as I know, feel free to file an RFE for it tho.

3. Does seem to reset every time, have vague recolection of a dev mail list discussion about something to do with this, will see if I can dig it up.

4. Open the default template, edit to what you want, save. should use that every time then.

Oops, yes. Now, I did try that, and it did open up awfully large, but not maximized.

Drat.

Would I do that via the regular Developer's Mailing List or... ?

Cool, thanks. It seems odd to me that the Save As location is saved but the Open location isn't.

That's what I thought. I just wanted to make sure so I didn't mess something up. Thanks!

The best we could concievably do is get it to one shortcut, is a whole extra keypress really that annoying?

If you look on the inkscape.org homepage theres a request features link on the left menu.

Looked up that thread, it was mainly the question being asked without much in the way of answers :S
Will see if I can find that the code for that stuff looks like this weekend sometime, might be pretty easy to fix, no promises tho :).

For me I just add the directory I want then just click it to take me during new session.

I think Simarilius has you pretty covered for everything, but I just wanted to say that this features would be unusual windows behaviour these days. Almost every program (Word, Photoshop, etc) will open a new document without closing the previous one.

Ack! I never paid attention to that "add" and "remove" button before. Thanks!

to open inkscape maximized every time, take a look at devil's pie and christner edward's tutorial at http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2007/07/25/ ... -in-gnome/.

Thanks, but I'm on Windows.

And by the way, did you check your private messages?

If all you want is maximised, saving the template maximised and checking inkscapes set to load window geom from files should be enough.

Thanks, but like I said before...

FooManChu wrote:Now, I did try that, and it did open up awfully large, but not maximized.

And in fact, once I drag it completely into view, I see that it is as large as what *would be* maximized. Yet, it isn't maximized.

I think I'm over it now though. If it does become possible to do it, then great, but otherwise I'll just stick to clicking one more button like you said. (See "...is a whole extra keypress really that annoying?")

Sure would make it easier to configure Inkscape how I want.

Oh? I don't have any PMs, so they must not have sent. Is it possible for you to resend?
