Is there a limit the maximum number of undos?
Is there a place in preferences to set the maximum number of undos?
I suspect this question has been asked and answered and is in the help files and tutorials and such but I've managed to avoid finding it during a fairly lengthy time searching for it.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!
No, there's no limit. You can undo all the way back to when you first opened the file. Look at Edit menu > Undo History. I seem to recall a graphics program, possibly GIMP, where you could set the number of undos, and that the reason was because a long undo list somehow adds to the file size. But that's not the case with Inkscape, as far as I understand.
Now having said that, if you had been furiously working, making many, many, many steps per hour, for several hours, and for some reason you wanted to go back to the Unchanged state, it might take Inkscape a few minutes to do it. But any number of undos are possible, as far as I know

Re: Maximum Undos - Undo Limit - Undo Levels
Hello Everyone,
I was looking also a few minutes ago for such a limit in the dev releases I regulary test & evaluates since Inkscape has become over the years one of my best professional tool as a manager.
I use it for schematics, drawings , flowsharts, ... which can be heavy for the memory : I'm regulary obliged to close my files since each moving , or edit of a object makes the memory grew again and again, and each release has the same behavior for years.. This comes to a point where there's just no memory left on the computer making it become appallingly slow..
I d'ont think this is a memory leak...
Such a limit would be so great..
Regards

In my opinion you should do this to free up memory, although I have only noticed a problem with large raster files in Inkscape. Of course any filter effects will have the same effect.
Anyway: Save your file. This by itself will not release the memory. Now revert. This will release the memory, but you will also lose all undos.

Your mind is what you think it is.
