How do I effectivly work with nodes?

Postby Brain Dawgs » Fri Sep 16, 2016 10:44 am

Hello, I'm a complete newcomer to this software and I'm currently working on a project involving gears. The gear I'm working on right now is supposed to be a type of gear sprocket. However, I can't seem to get the program to do what I want.

Essentially, I trying to create lines connecting the nodes with the red arrows and I wish to remove the line highlighted with the blue arrows. Thus creating a partially broken gear.

If anyone can provide any insight into this I would be grateful.

Click on the line between the blue arrows, using the Node tool. (This selects 2 nodes.) Click 'Delete segment between 2 non-endpoint nodes' button on the Node tool control bar.

Select the 2 end nodes (at the red arrows) that you want to join, and click either 'Join selected nodes' button or 'Join selected end nodes with a new segment' button.

Note that only end nodes can be connected. It's not possible to connect nodes of a closed path, or nodes which are not at the ends of an open path.

I'm not clear exactly what you're asking. So if the above isn't it, you can explain a little more?

For some reason when I click "join selected nodes" or "Join selected end nodes with a new segment" nothing happens.

Essentially, what I'm trying to do is this (except with better lines):

Brynn's instructions were absolutely correct.

Make sure you've selected the end nodes that you want to join with a new segment, but just try to close one end at a time - in other words you should have just the two end nodes at the 9 o'clock position selected, then click the button to join them with a new segment. For the 12 o'clock position it looks like you'll probably want to delete the current end node from the outer path first, then select both end nodes and click the button.

I guess the main problem I'm having is that when I click the button for joining with a new segment, nothing happens. Also, when I delete the node you mentioned, the picture looks like this.

Did you delete the segment pointed to by the two blue arrows first? (Per Brynn's instructions)

I think it would be a lot easier if you were to upload the SVG file so that we can see exactly how the path is structured.

Since svg does not allow y shaped paths you must have some duplicated nodes under the visible ones that are causing unpredictable behavior. Provide the file for a quick explanation and fix.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Sorry about the delay, here is the file.

I hope this file hosting site is acceptable.

Thanks for uploading the file, that totally helps.

Couple of notes:

The gear path is actually two, one right on top of the other, so I'd delete one.

The inner arc is not circular, nor does an end node line up on an axis from the center to the end of the tooth path. (see the image attached.)

I'd start with a complete gear ring, and make a triangular object to cut a "pie-slice" out.

PS:

Seems easier to make the big gear, cut the pie-slice and then cut the center out.

Ok, I did as you said and it worked like a charm! This make the program make a lot more sense now. I still haven't mastered the art of keeping my circles perfect (I hold down control but sometimes the circle still bends out of shape). I'm hoping that my shapes are still more or less symmetrical.

Here is the result I got: http://www.filedropper.com/largegearstage2

and here is what the triangle I used looked like.

Thanks for the help! :D

That looks pretty good...

For greater precision, you can use guides and snapping tools to locate the apex of the pie slice at the center of the gear.
