[solved] Image has lost imbeded information

Postby LeperColony » Wed Jul 13, 2016 10:24 pm

I've encountered another issue with.

I use Inkscape to make maps for a gaming campaign. I started this on what is now my old computer, and this is what I had:

When I got a new computer, I backed up my files and now on my new computer, I am trying to resume my work, but for some reason the image in inkscape has lost embedded information. Here is what I am currently seeing. Please note, I have not in any way changed the file. All I did was back up my old info on dropbox, upgrade computers, re-install inkscape (which is newer than the one I was using originally), and grabbed the file from dropbox.

As you can see, whether or not I have lost information seems to follow no rhyme or reason.

If it's important to know, there are several layers involved. I put the file itself on my dropbox. You can find it here:

Any help would be appreciated!

Update:

So I have looked at the file closer, and it appears for some reason that two Layers, the Hex Grid and the Hex Coordinates somehow have vanished. They simply don't exist any longer. It's not a matter of them not displaying.

Is there any way to recover them? Or, alternatively, to copy entire layers from other inkscape files? I have similar maps with an identical hex grid and coordinates.

Opening it in a notepad it seems they are still there to some extent.

<g
id="g3699"
inkscape:groupmode="layer"
inkscape:label="Hex Coordinates"
sodipodi:insensitive="true">

<g
id="g3165"
inkscape:groupmode="layer"
inkscape:label="Hex Grid"
sodipodi:insensitive="true">

Not sure about the hex grid layer, all there is are <line> objects -they are not implemented in inkscape as per se, maybe they were connector objects unfortunately with the same name? They seem to come from another file not created with inkscape.

After more investigation there is alot "garbage" in the middle of the file, non-svg codes inkscape could hardly add at all.
Seems a base64 coding went wrong before it (embedded raster images). Thousands of these codes.

After deleting them, layers below appear.

(edit: dropbox was full, had removed the file)

Lazur,

Thank you very much! I would never have thought to try to look in notepad. Of course, even if I had, I'd have had no clue what to look for.

Really appreciate your help. Saved me a lot of time. I've grabbed the file!
